Default Adopt Army Newbee headed to Baghdad

I am an eighteen year Army guy who will be heading to Baghdad in January 07. I do enjoy a good cigar but am by no means an expert. As a matter of fact, I am not even a novice. Every time I leave my family for an extended amount of time, I smoke a cigar when I arrive where I am going and one when I leave. I usually go to a cigar shop and ask the fella working there for advise. I do not own a humidor so I ask for something that will travel well and stay relatively fresh. This is my first and only deployment to Baghdad, I will retire upon my return.
I am looking to see if anyone would like to donate to the cause. My plan is to smoke a cigar upon arrival in Kuwait (where you stop for integration training prior to going to Iraq). Then smoking a cigar upon arrival in Baghdad. I will then smoke one cigar a month or week (depending upon responses).
If you would like to have one of your favorites smoked in Baghdad, I would be more than glad to help facilitate this. After smoking your fav, I would send you an email, let you know what was going on in my AO (unclassified version) and let you know how the experience was.
If there are any takers, let me know. I don't have the money to finance my idea and would be totally dependent on volunteers. Also, if I am violating any cigar etiquette or any rules of this site, please let me know and I will cease.

Well, it is normally in poor form to make your first post attempting to get free cigars. Although, as a Canadian I would like to thank you for your service.

I see it as a neat idea, but your first post is not an appropriate time to ask or suggest it. A lot of us are already involved in sending cigars to the troops overseas.

    Default Thanks Drew

Sorry if I came off over eager or greedy. I am not only a novice at cigars, I am also a novice at negotiating this site or a forum in general. This is my first. I would like to open this up for discussion or suggestions. I am sure that while I am overseas, my job will allow for ample time to check this site or to read and answer emails. Thank you again for your input and suggestion.

No worries. You seem genuine enough about it. Just stick around and see what some other (more experienced) members have to say.

I might be interested if I were sending a cigar to an APO (or whatever the military uses for oversea addresses) address. However, if this is to be mailed to Tuscon, or Tallahasee, or Topeka or some such bullshit...I don't think so.
Also, if you're 18, how many extended absences from your family have you been on to do your ritual smoke?
One more thing, if you're 18, and you're heading to Iraq, how do you plan on retiring when you return? I'm not trying to bust your balls, but how long do you think you'll be over there, and how long is your enlistment?
Again, I'm not trying to be a prick; if you're legit, I say thank you for serving. But if you're some kind of asshat-piece-of-shit-fuckwad-cumguzzling-cigar mooch who is using a bullshit story to score cigars, I hope someone shoves a barber pole straight up your ass (and I'm not talking about a cigar).

Oh no... I think Tommy would fare far better at either of these two boards:
    cigarsnobs.com
    cigarrebellion.12.forumer.com

I think this guy is full of shit and should rot in hell for attempting to MOOCH from us by saying he is headed to Baghdad......

    ASSHOLE
I'm not big on doing reviews, tobacco doesn't taste like "cocoa" or "nutty" or "mocha" to me, it tastes like freakin' TOBACCO. I know what I like and I really don't care what other people think of other cigars. I've never read a review and said to myself "Wow, that sounds like a cigar I'd like to try!"

upon re-reading...it seems as if "tommy" is not 18 years of age...but rather,an 18 year army veteran......a 42 year old army career guy who can't afford ANY cigars???

c'mon tommy...shoot straight here.....between all of us we can send tons of cigars...don't piss on my leg and tell me it's raining.....you're mooching,right??....

I think the APO box is a great idea. Maybe we could have some folks pledge a cigar or 2, have one central person collect the smokes, and then ship them all off when we have proof of an APO. That way it is all condensed into one package, and if it is going to an APO, we know it is going somewhere good.

(I am under assumption that APO is military only...somebody please correct this crazy Canuck if he is wrong )

I put in my BIO that I am 42 and in the Army for 18 years. I did not Say that I am 18. I have been on many extended trips away from my family. I wouldn't have ever thought of asking anyone to send anything to where ever. I will be deploying in late January and thought that I might talk back and forth with folks until then. I do not know if any of you have been away for long periods of time but you try to figure out mile markers to pass your tours. I was hoping that having cigars sent to me in Iraq and then having dialog about the cigar, it would break up the monotony. I agree with the post that said anyone pretending to be separated from their family for a year is the lowest of lows. I was sent a post from Drew and I know that I addressed this incorrectly. Are their second chances or has my sophomoric introduction ended it for me?

Wow..I am not sure who Tony Dogs is, but I hope that he/she writes well. I am from Oklahoma, I joined the Army in 1988. I came in late in Army years, I was 24. I had tried the college thing, Oklahoma State, Go Pokes! After failing there miserably, my major was Rugby, I joined the Army. I have been to Germany three times to Korea once and spent time in Alabama. I was without my wife in Germany for a good portion of one tour and was without my wife and two daughters while in Korea, that was my latest tour. I returned in May 04. While in Germany I gave up smoking cigarettes. I smoked an occasional cigar from a shop in the local village. While in Korea, I meant a guy from my running club. It was a Hash club (not the drug hash); it is a drinking club with a running problem. He is an employee with the US embassy in South Korea. His drinking name is "Jolly Green Knob". Long story short. He was very educated in the cigar world and on every Saturday after our runs, he would introduce me to different cigars and a sip on Cognac. I do not miss being away from my family, but I do miss those Saturdays with Jolly and his wonderful cigars. That's a little about me. I hope that it quells any thought of me being some sort of fraud.

Nice intro Tommy. You'll have to excuse us around here, ya see, one thing about this place is it comes up pretty quick in google searches for cigar sites and we get an unbelieveable amount of scammers, thieves, asshats, etc., that join here and think we're all a buncha fools. As a result, some of the guys can be a little "rough" at first but we've got a pretty good group of people here.

Stick around and post in some threads and see if you like the place. It's all what you make of it.
