Thread: RP Edge

    Default RP Edge

Had the opportunity to try an RP Edge (maduro) last nite at a local cigar bar event. Although the initial draw was unsatisfactory, most likely due to a poor trim, followed by a second attempt with a single edge guillotine which smashed more than it cut ... the draw Finlay fixed itself and I could begin to enjoy the smoke.

I really enjoyed the smoke and marveled at how "mild" it was, judged by how it didn't burn when exhaled through my nose/sinuses. Great smoke at $5.50 at the local.

Imagine my surprise when I read on CI that it was "The Edge is no doubt one of the stronger cigars on the market: that’s why the ads say ’for professional smokers only.’ "

I know I generally have the sensitivity of a goat, but this has me even more confused than normal. I have had a Gurkha Legend Beauty (ridiculously priced at $30/stick) which I did find too "strong" to really enjoy at the time. Now that I think about it I had a RyJ Reserve Maduro which is also rated as "full" which I also found delightful.

I am clearly unclear on the concept of Strength, strong != full etc.

    Any hope for this newbie?

I have had an Edge Torpedo maduro, and was also surprised at how smokeable it was. seemed pretty mild, considering the advertising. Very enjoyable smoke!

Ahh, the old body vs strength question. Certainly this is a difficult thing to understand, and as a relative newbie myself, I still struggle with it also.

In you example, I too find the Edge to be a medium strength cigar, but it has a full body flavorwise to me.....pretty much the same for the RyJ maduro, though I find it a little less strong than the Edge.

Search around on the site a bit.....I think there is a specific thread here that does a good job on this dicussion.....I'll try to find it and post a link when I get a chance.

i too wonder at this phenomenon, however as i smoke more i think i am starting to see what is meant by strength. i believe that what you are percieving is not that the cigar is mild in body, but smooth in flavor rather than spicy in flavor. i think i started to pick this up after smoking some full bodied cigars (my favorites are maduros) and having the same feeling that they were very smokable. then later i smoked so more full's but ones that where also spicy (CAO brazilia) they had the same quantifiable amount of flavor but the picy ones were more harsh so i percieved them as more full bodied.

P.S. i am also a n00b so this could be and in all likelihood is 100% wrong but this is the way i worked it out in my head. hope this helps.

If the torp didn't do anything, don't bother with that 60 gauge edge monster either. Had one the other day and it was downright weak. No bite, little flavor. Well made, good burn and draw with little of anything else. Might as well put a Mac band on it.

Having smoked many strong cigars I find the Edge a little on the strong side of medium. I like em but they are not as strong as many cigars I've had.
