Thread: After Taste

  1. Default After Taste

Please forgive the truly newbie question, but...

What is most commonly done about the dark-foul-sour after-taste that usually follows a cigar?

I have tried different beverages (libations!) with them, and that seems to REDUCE, but not ELIMINATE such after-taste.

I have also tried not consuming the entire cigar; letting it dwindle somewhere beyond the half-way point so as not to go down to the literally "bitter end."

    All to no avail. Suggestions?

Brushing your teeth afterwards, or at least before bed, helps. If I smoke then go to bed without brushing, I definately taste it in the morning. I don't find it bitter though. I don't think it has to do with how much you smoke, so smoke that thing if you enjoy it.

What are you smoking? Do you notice it more with certain cigars?

Agreed. if you brush your teeth that should help. Listerine or any mouthwash works well also.

I don't think you can totally eliminate it. Try a 50/50 solution of 3% hyd. peroxide and water. Rince, don't swallow.

For me the whole experience of smoking a cigar are all the experiences of the stick. The smells before you toast it. The bouquet it gives off as you smoke it. The tastes on the tongue as you smoke it. And lastly the aftertaste that dances on the tongue long after it has been smoked. I try to enjoy all of these things when I smoke a cigar.

Try and look at the aftertaste as part of the experience. If the aftertaste is something you are not enjoying, switch sticks and experience as many different sticks until you find one that finishes the way you want it.

Thats the beauty of this hobby. One gets to try many different things and sees what they like and what they don’t like…I know what I like in a cigar but more importantly I know what I don’t like.

If after all this you still find yourself not liking the aftertaste of a cigar but still enjoy the act of smoking it… Buy yourself a tooth brush and carry it around with you. I also find that Certs help a lot too.

I've found poor quality tobacco leaves a nasty aftertaste. What are you smoking?

I find that one of the "baking soda" toothpastes seems to work better than average.

Hell, sometimes I will smoke a good cigar down until it's burning my fingers. You know, just can't put it down, or am I cheap?

    1. What cigar are you smoking, that's causing this.
    2. How was the cigar kept? Humidor, outside, 65% Humidity, 65 temp?

I've noticed bad cigars, produce harsh smoke and horrible aftertaste. Also, even the premium of premiums, if kept in horrible conditions can produce the same effects.

When I first started smoking, the aftertaste was always very pronounced, even on high quality cigars. Now, I barely notice it. So it may just be something you get used too.... that being said, try eating something(of substance) before brushing teeth/mouth wash. That always worked best for me.

I think it is more than likely the cigars. I generally love the lingering aftertaste of a good cigar. If it tastes nasty afterwards I usually won't go back to that stick. More than likley I tossed it before even finishing it.

I guess the question is, are you talking about the immediate aftertaste, or the next day dragon breath that inevitably comes after a night of cigars? If you're having issues with the immediate aftertaste of the cigar, you're either smoking shitty cigars (of which there's nothing to be ashamed of) or you may have eaten something before smoking that is causing a disagreement on the tongue. Try changing up what you eat before you smoke, or smoking something different.
If you're talking about the next day funk, make sure you brush before bed and first thing when you get up. Another thing that I've found really helps is to floss, too. I hate flossing, but I've really been making the effort to floss every night and I've found it really cuts down on the after-cigar morning breath.
    And welcome from MT.

I am a noob so take this with that in mind. I agree that the stick appears to make a huge difference in the taste and after-taste. Now I don't taste the cherry-oak-etc flavors but have begun to notice that some cigars seem to affect my mouth differently. Some create a "dry ash tray" feeling in the roof of my mouth, whereas, others seem to smoke very clean and fresh. (I am continually being surprised by RP brands, particularly the OSG and Sun Grown!)

Similarly, the aftertaste depends on the cigar also. Some seem to burn "hot", much like a pipe burns the tongue until it is sufficiently scarred. Others seen to cause mild "heartburn" symptoms.

I find it interesting and need to determine a better method of recording my observations, currently my method consists of investing in a box of those that I enjoy - not sure if cbid (cigarbid.com) is a curse or blessing

Again, I am struggling to understand what is going on. It doesn't seem to matter what I drink with the smoke - although, a good single-malt is my solution to a bad taste and/or after taste.

In "Idiots guide to Cigars", he claims that better aging techniques remove distasteful chemicals and improve the taste. Interesting read btw, although not the final answer in storage etc, no mention of beads.

    Cheers,

    Rusty

I agree, the aftertaste is part of what makes a cigar good to me.

I can tell the difference in after-tastes between good and bad cigars, or cigars that need more rest. But a really good, well aged cigar, seems to me to have a pleasant after-taste. Maybe it's just me...

I've been considering the same question, but it does seem to be (newb and all) that the quality and aging is related to this. It definitely varies from one cigar to another. Last night I had a Tabak Especial Dulce and being that I was drinking a bit (if you measure "bit" in litres) I forgot to brush. No remaining tastes this morning. But others actually come back even after brushing.

Here is an article from CigarCyclopedia.com that offers a few suggestions.
