Thread: Rocky Patel R4

  1. Default Rocky Patel R4

Just finished smoking a R4 by Rocky Patel. I have come to like many Rocky Patel Cigars, and this one was no diffrent. At first glance the R4 (I had the Maduro torpedo), looks very similar to the Edge, just a tad bit smaller. For torpedos, I usually perfer a V-cut. After cutting the R4 with the V I noticed the draw was very tight. I took out the trusty Xikar, and cut a bit more off. Draw was alot looser but not perfect. Light up the cigar and found that it not only looked but also tasted similar to the Edge. I still dont have a refined palate like most of you to pick out all the small tastes, but the cigar was pretty good. After the first inch or so I began having some bad burn problems and had to touch it up a few times. Halfway through the burn evened itself out. Throught out the cigar the draw was still somewhat tight. Overall I liked the cigar, especially for the price, and would recomend trying it if you like the Edge, or other RP cigars.

Thanks for the review. I was interested in this cigar a while back and wondered if anyone had tried it before. Sounds like it would be a good smoke.
Just wondering, where did you get your Rocky Patel R4 from?

Got them off cigarbid. $13 for a 5er. Worth the money in my book.

    I think they are a CI/Cbid exclusive. Got a 5er waiting, can't wait.

    Default Rp R4

Well, I thought I might chime-in here, since I have had a few of these Torpedo R4's over the past few weeks.
The number 1 (negative) issue I have experienced is: Tight Draw. VERY Tight. I ordered a bundle of R4's from CI about 6 weeks ago. Of course, I jumped right on one as soon as UPS rang the doorbell. I couldn't help it. Well, that was not a very satisfactory smoke session. So, OK I thought: let's put these babies to bed for a while a see if we can improve their condition. So, after about 2 weeks, I gave it a go just to see if there was any change. Right away, I noticed that the hardness of the cigar was beyond any others in my collection and had not really improved much. Smoke number 2 was a repeat of the first; hard to draw, difficult to keep lit, and a little uneven with the burn. If it sat in the ashtray for more than 2 minutes, it would die out.
On the positive side: When you do get it going, it's a decent smoke. I like the hint of cedar and woodyness together with the peppery spice. I figure that it's still worth some effort to get the results.
My 3rd try yesterday went much better. Although, I still can't let it sit for more than a minute or two. So I am thinking that 6 weeks in the humi has really helped this stick and, hopefully, the remainder of the smokes will not be so dang ornery.
Would I buy RP R4's again? No, but, I'm not giving up on these yet. If anything changes, I'll come back to this thread with an update, otherwise, I've got about 15 of these guys to burn and I'm going to keep on puffing.
