Bought a new rifle

I couldn't agree more, the majority of gun crime is not due to rifles or shotguns. I am a bit on the more rediculus side though and think all autos should be banned (i mean what do you do with them other than dick around wasting ammo? not trying to be a dick, i just don't know what else you do with them. Can you use them to hunt?) and only revolvers should be sold to the public (if you can't get it done in six shots you probably shouldn't own a gun). I am being a little fecicous and over the top here, but my bottomline is they should have so many restrictions in some state to purchase guns such as rifles and shotguns.

Sorry for the thread jack, but those look like really nice guns guys. my father has a really old winchester pump that he claims was one of the greatest shotguns ever made (no clue if thats true). it was originally my grandfathers and in great condition, but heavy beyond all belief.

When you mention auto's, are you referring to FULL auto, as in machine gun? In that case the trigger is pulled once, and the magazine empties. In SEMI auto, rifle or pistol, the trigger is pulled, and one round fires, and the next round is automatically loaded into the chamber. Pull the trigger again, and one more round fires. In a handgun, the subsequent rounds require less effort to fire the next one. Just so everyone understands.
This country was founded on being able to own firearms, to defend oneself from all sorts of danger, animal and human, also to put food on the table.
I feel strongly that felons, and the mentally frail should not be able to own weapons.

Wow, upon re-reading my post i messed some grammer stuff up. You are correct, i meant fully automatic weapons as shotguns and the like can be semi-auto. aslo at the end of the post, i meant to say that state should NOT have as many restrictions on buying shotguns and rifle etc. Thats just my two cents, and i am no expert on guns or the laws governing their purchase, this is just what logically makes sense to me.

on a more related not, i noticed jfellows showed us a pic of his over/under shotgun. At the risk of showing my naivety, is this a gun with two diffrent shotgun barrels (statard and modified i think are the options), or is it a shotgun over a rifle?

over/under shotguns are one shotgun barrel of another shotgun barrel. both barrels are identical.

Fixed, but you had the right idea. Both are chambered in 3" 20 gauge in this case.

So is there an advantage to an over/under gun as opposed to a side by side double?

i imagine its just personal preference

I'm not an expert, but I think Side by Side guns generally use two triggers...O/U (at least in this case) uses a single trigger to fire the shells in both barrels. The gun is cocked when you fold the front end back in to close the back of the chambers (like with a Side by Side...I think), but then you can pull the [only] trigger twice (to fire twice) before having to reload.

Not sure on the number of triggers on a O/U.
I'll agree with Eville, personal preference. You aim the SxS in the middle of the two barrels, so I would go with an O/U. My current shotgun is a pump.
They do make semi auto shotguns, but they are very pricey, the newest from Baretta, a break open semi runs $3200.
Some companies make a three barreled rifle, with three different calibers, none are shot shells tho.
I don't hunt, but folks I know that do, use primarily a shotgun of their own want.
Handguns are the biggest crime problem, I'm getting another one, as it's become a hobby.

Shotguns were the first powder based hunting weapons IIRC (musket). Because the ammo is a bunch of lead pellets, the barrel tolerances aren't exacting. A big plus for those lacking a machinist shop. Not only that, but before the days of automatic action, multiple barrels was the only way to get more than one shot out of your shotgun.

The original intent/advantage of the more recent double barrel shotguns was hunting birds. The first shot is fired from a barrel with a modified choke. This gives a wider shot pattern at closer range. The second shot is fired from a full choke barrel, which gives a tighter pattern which spreads out at longer ranges. The logic being that, after firing your first shot, the missed first target or new secondary target will be on the run and thus at a longer range.

Clay pigeons are a way to simulate and practice hunting birds. Skeet is a sport based on clay pigeons that the wealthy like to play. Expensive and ornamental over/under shotguns are typically marketed to this group.
