Is That a Fact? # 7: Around 1586, Sir Walter Raleigh began the popularization of pipe smoking in Great Britain. The cultivation and consumption of tobacco spread with each voyage of discovery from Europe. In the early 1600’s, some merchants began to place small wooden figures on countertops to represent tobacco products they offered. These precursors to the traditional Native American styled Cigar Store Indians were referred to as "Virginians" (the local English renditions of Indians.)
