Greeting and salutations my fine Gentleman and Ladies

New member here. I have smoked casually since high school whenever the thought or urge struck me. I have never been serious about it. Now I am thinking of getting some cigar learn'n and having some fun with it.

I posted a thread about a coolidor I am designing in the accessories forum, but figured I should do a proper intro as well.

I am an avid homebrewer and am very active on Homebrewtalk.com. I was referred here via a post by Chefchris.

Anyway, with my zero knowledge base, my favorite cigars (very broadly) are Rocky Patel Fusions and Arturo Fuentes Hemmingways. I don't know much of anything about cigars except how to light them and smoke them, so I am having fun learning and doing a lot of reading here.

You seem like a good group of thick-skinned interweb warriors and hope I will file into your ranks.

Anyone from the greater Milwaukee area? I like to spend time at the Nice Ash cigar bar in Waukesha...

I find that the key to forums is reading before speaking. Kind of like gauging a crowd. Anyone who isn't a complete idiot could figure out that this forum appreciates formal introductions.

Nice intro! Welcome from John Day Oregon! I hope you enjoy this forum as much as I do! If you get an opportunity try the CAO Golds, brazillia, and Italia, those are all fine smokes IMHO. Welcome. Roger.

lol. I just saw that thread.

Once I have my humi setup (whatever that may be) I will definitely look into the Newbtastic sampler.

COA's are on my short list. I don't think I have ever had one. I am probably going to the cigar bar next week, I'll try one of your suggestions then.

Also, I have never been to a HERF, but there is one at the cigar bar (Nice Ash) this Saturday. What kind of events are these? Do they vary a lot (my guess)? Should I know my ass from my elbow before going? Are they often times a "who's is bigger" kind of thing, or laid back hang out time?

They can vary quite a bit. I used to frequent a B&M that would watch football, BBQ, and drink beer all day. It was a bit ritzy-ditzy, and the guys there usually smoked higher-end cigars, but there wasn't much pressure. They gave everybody shit all the time, much like this place.

The only times I've ever experienced a "bigger dick" mentality is with the non-regular who comes in and criticizes the established flow of the place (sound familiar? dauker?). They generally aren't welcomed anyway, and usually don't come back.

Best advice - ask questions. Go with what interests you. Admit you don't know anything, but don't immediately get sold on something the seller is pushing - choose something that looks appealing to YOU, then enjoy it. You'll find, like beer, cigars are very subjective in taste. I love strong, dark pale ales and porters, but I also like the Beast. I can't stand Bud, Miller, Pabst, beers at all. Go figure.
