FWIW - there is no proper etiquette. Some guys rag on each other's wives, others don't. It's better, of course, to default to "not" when dealing with essential strangers.

Personally, I found your comment a bit out of left field and certainly better left unsaid, but on the other hand, I did not think it warrented quite the level of reaction it got. To be truthful, it felt like a few folks were just piling on.
