Question: Can I use an Antique Glass Cigar Display jar to store cigars?

Hey everyone.

I've got a question regarding an antique glass cigar canister.

I recently received (as a gift) an antique store counter La Palina Glass Jar. I was thinking it would be a nice place to store some cigars. Does anyone have an ideas as to whether this would work, or if my cigars would become brittle within a few weeks? I'm not looking for long term storage, as I tend to smoke a cigar within a few months of purchase. Does anyone have any advice on how to make this work?

c) If you're storing them in there for more than a weekish, I'd advise installing some humidification. I recommend rh beads 65% Linky

d) Also be sure to keep it out of direct sunlight. Glass jars tend to hold heat.. bad for cigars!

A lot of the glass jars had a sponge that sat up in the cover. If it doesn't have one there should be a place for one.

if you are storing the cigars in a jar, wouldn't that cause burn issues? the cigars would be standing up and as everyone knows cool air falls, hot rises. thats means the cigars would be stored at different temps, in different parts of the cigar. i'm just assuming here, but couldn't that mean different relative humidity too?

dunno if this is true or not, but it seems to make sense to me. someone who knows, let me know :)

I think the temperature variance would be virtually unmeasureable in such a small environment.

Must cigars be stored horizontally?
Cigars are stored horizontally because in a completely still environment moist air is very slow to mix with drier air. It obviously does stabilize eventually, but with a humidor's frequent openings and closings, this "layering effect" may make your stogies burn irregularly. You can minimize the effect by storing cigars horizontally (and not opening your box too often). I'd recommend a tupperdor over a jar for this reason.

Sliding cigars in and out of a cigar jar can often damage the ends of their delicate wrappers - it's best to subject your cigars to as little handling as possible. A shoebox size tupperdor hardly costs more than a single good cigar, and you'll be able to store more cigars (and longer ones). Picture an 8" tall jar (big enough for larger 7 1/2" sizes) with a few 4 1/2" robustos mixed in. You'll have to dump them all out to get at the shorter ones!

I too tried a jar some time back. It was very hard to keep the RH even. When I would first refill the little hygro the RH would be way too high, then after a few openings it would quickly drop too low.
