You'll do well to invest in something descent to cut your stogies with. Most of the guys at my local B&M use a cigar punch cutter, although traditional Xikars are popular as well. When using a punch, I get the best results after dampening the cap with moisture from my mouth. I (think I) don't run the risk of splitting the cap.
If I have the time, I personally use a very sharp pocketknife.
