Forget all the peppermint perfume hype. It's only temporary anyway. Clean means fresh. Brush your teeth, and gums with a good power toothbrush and floss at least a couple times a week. The most important thing for breath is brushing the BACK of the tongue, almost into the throat. Mucus builds up here and traps a lot of food particles, smoke residue, and grows a lot of bacteria. You must break this up completely. It's not easy because of the gag reflex. You'll have to train yourself for a while before you can do it properly. If you do it right, you'll have a nasty wad of gunk to spit out and you won't be able to see a film on your tongue no matter how far back you look. Afterwards, gargle with a mild anti-bacterial mouthwash or a solution of hydrgen peroxide and water or baking soda and water. Just plain water if nothing else is available. Your breath will be fresh for a long time after doing this.

I brush so far back, my wife can't stand to watch me do it.
