Will it be necessary to stay in the "theme" of the tray? For example, would it be bad form to suggest a put that is a maduro and take a stick in the long stick tray? Will it be necessary to trade maduro for maduro, long-filler for long-filler, etc.?

Nope, the names are just names.

However, it would be good to stick <sic> with cigars that fit in the trays. The 8-stick trays won't handle Churchills, for example. You'll see this from the pics (coming).
