Thumbs down Oliveros XL Double Corojo

I know I've only had a few posts up to this point, however I figured I would give reviewing a shot. I had planned to do a review on whatever I happened to smoke today. As luck would have it, (or lack there of) I pulled an Oliveros XL out of my humidor. I'm not sure if anyone else has heard of Oliveros, but I got a fiver of these with a humidor purchase I recently made from an undisclosed online retailer. Here's a bit of info on these:

    Wrapper: Corojo
Filler: Dominican, Corojo, Nicaraguan, & Honduran

Just from the filler, you can tell this is a mutt. I'm sure there are mixed filler cigars out there that are just fine, however this isn't one of them.

1st third: Very chemical tasting. I would say that it was a lot like smoking fertilizer, mixed with straight saccharine. Draw was none too impressive, however it wasn't bad and produced an ok amount of smoke. All in all, nothing to write home about unless it's a letter of warning.

2nd third: More of the same, however the saccharine taste got much stronger. This cigar burns hot as hellfire.

Final third: Honestly, I put it out before I got to this point, and anyone who can make it to the final third is a hero in my book. I'm not one for wasting tobacco of any kind, but it was a damn easy decision to put this one out.

All told it was just about the most unpleasant thing that I've ever smoked. I have had Swisher Sweets that were better than this cigar. The absolute worst part is that this cigar actually scored a 90 from CA, and a 9.2 from Cigar Insider. To tell the truth, I'm not sure how or if this actually happened. If you'd like to know what it's like to have a dog take a dump in your mouth, by all means fire one of these up and find out.

Thanks for the review. That sucks you found a bummer.

I too, am hard pressed to put a smoke down once its started, no matter how bad.

That being said, I can send you a fiver of DE Naturals for comparison (of dog shit)

I did not care for the 2 I smoked. Oliveros hasn't had a good cigar in 5 or so years
The older I get ,the better I was

    Default Thanks

Thanks for the review. I have always been attracted to the packaging and look of the Oliveros but have never smoked one. I look for good experiences in smoking a cigar and so now I can safely say that avoiding them would be a wise choice. Thanks again. Roger.

Hmmm, I would caution you to not make decisions based on others experience with a cigar. Taste is very, very subjective and one mans dog-rocket is another mans weekend treat.

Nothing against the OP, or his reviewing prowess, but how do you know the relation between cigars he likes.......and the ones you like? It is best to be very familiar with the reviewers likes/dislikes, based on his past reviews vs. your experiences with the same cigar, imho.

Just to be clear, I have little experience with Oliveros, but I have a couple in the humi that this review won't prevent me from smoking.

    Wink Good One!

Well I guess I should try for myself and see what I think then. It seemed that the review was a little bit on the harsh side. And yes, I admit not everyone likes or dislikes the same thing. So I guess I could try and see for myself. I think it's just a bit easy to be "influenced" by what people's perceptions are. But thanks for that. And I suppose there might be such a thing as the cigar was too new and not aged enough, or just ended up with a bad gar. Whichever the case, it is unfortunate that he had an awful experience with it. Thanks again. Roger.

Very true. I personally didn't like the XL, but others may love them. This review (and any review for that matter) should be taken with a grain of salt. Roger had a good point as well. The cigar may not have been aged properly, or could have just been a bad stick. I have a few more in the humi that I'll leave for a bit and I might try again.
