Have you thought about using the common cigars sizes, cigarello, corona, lonsdale, double corona etc, I know that's obvious, or maybe ring gauge sizes.

I don't like the idea of using different cigar sizes.

The Site Owner of CigarSnobs uses cigar BRANDS which I think is a classic
    A newbie starts off as:
    "Black and Mild"
then after a certain number of posts (which is some oddball number like 27) you become:
    "Phillies Blunt"
    followed by:
    "Shisher Sweet"
    "White Owl"
    "Lars Teten"
    "TeAmo"
    "Don Mateo"
    "Henry Clay"
    "Macanudo"
    "AVO"
and so forth and so on.......
What I think is pretty cool about it is that no one knows EXACTLY what the cutoff point is where you reach the next level so it's fun to watch your member title automatically change to some other dog rocket brand of cigar So as you increase your post count, the brand of the cigar under your avatar or member title gets snobbier.

I'm the second highest poster there and have attained "AVO" but I don't know what comes after that because the person with the highest number of posts is the dickhead administrator who chooses his own personal member title.

At some point, the member can create his own personal member title

i like both CC's and razrbakcrzy's suggestions. i belong to a chainmailling board and we just went through some what of a disaster when trying to rank members. the old system seemed like the more posts you made, the more knowlgeable you were. it didn't reflect any accual skill at all. the new system involves a ranks like kabizter (sp?), master speaker, Grand master speaker, although the highest rank was still kept at Anceint Forge as kind of an honor for being around for so long. we also showed how many articles or submittions we've made.

in short, i don't think the suggestions mentioned before would give these problems. so i vote for them.

I'd agree, CC's idea seems pretty cool. That would give the "ranks" or whatever you'd like to call it, a wide variety of choices.
