Thread: Die-Hard Collector

  1. Default Die-Hard Collector

While I usually enjoy about 3-4 cigars per week I am really involved with storing 75-150 cigars of a very limited or sought after production run for long periods of time.

I usually pick a particularly sought after line, buy 3-6 boxes of them, and store them for in excess of 10 years. To prevent cross contamination of flavors from other cigars I usually use a seperate humidor for each brand/type I store. (I currently have 9 humidors devoted just to storing vintage stogies, including one that holds 200, 1992, Cuban, Montecristo #1's.)

Is anyone else involved in this type of collecting? Also, I am interested in making another investment, can anyone recommend a good, value appreciating, cigar?

Why stockpile so many of one choice instead of diversifying your collection ?

One or two to keep untouched, and one to sample from over the years I can understand, but why 8 boxes?

I usually store 3-6 stogies of very limited or VERY expensive production runs. But, the large quantities that I store are usually cigars which are almost sure bets of being future classics. I prefer the large numbers because it can lead to a large payoff. (Enjoyment payoff, not financial payoff.) My large quantities are chosen carefully, and seriously pondered before investing such large quantities of money.

Are they all the same production box code? Do you diversify the source for variety?

I usuallyy try to diversify somewhat with the production code, but that is not always possible since I Live in Canada and there is not a lot of selsction up here. Anything I buy in such large quantities has to be special ordered from my local shop and the only varience I get comes from that one order.

Whoa!! I must you sir for being able to do that.

I really don't think I could sit on 6-8 boxes of a single stick UNLESS it WAS for financial gain.....I mean I guess I agree with Hugh here. I enjoy trying different things and I couldn't imagine smoking 6-8 boxes of the same thing.....but nonetheless it is your time and money....be well and enjoy those sticks.

I'm curious, it sounds like you are using "desktop" style humidors - is that correct?

If I were you and didn't want to buy a large piece of furniture - I'd get a 150+ quart cooler and leave my cigars in their respective boxes inside the cooler. Inside the box you don't have to worry about "cross contamination" - I think the integtrity of the cigars will remain better if stored this way as well as having them in the box keeps track of exactly which items are belong to which box / factory / dates etc.

Desktops are thought to be best used for short term storage.

While the Coolidor solution is a great idea, (I actually did that for 3 years), I went humidor crazy a few years back and bought over a dozen humidors. (Mostly large 200 -300 count decorative humidors.) I keep them around my home as decoration pieces and as functional storage units.

As for the potential long term storage problems, all my humidors are retrofitted with resovior storage humidity elements. They can go unfilled for approximately 1 year each. Also, to ensure that I get proper humidity, I also use digital hygrometers with high/low memory settings. (If they ever go outside the 68-72 range I can see.) In addition to all this, I very rarely open the humidors. The more they are sealed the better they work.

Finally, I also enjoy trying new cigars. I just took delivery of my new 6 x 8 x 2.5 cabinet humidor for my study. It is equipped with a 110 volt, electronically controlled humidifier. If anyone had any questions about long term storage of cigars, I have pretty much seen it all. (Although I have probably only seen about 5% of what can happen. )

As for cross contmination between production runs, since I have to order all my cigars from the same store, they are all a very uniform production run. (There is very limited selection where I live so I must order them.)

Storing cigars for a long term can be very rewarding for the future.

My digital camera is currently indisposed, (Unstable Canoe + Sony Cybershot = Problem), but it should be fixed witin the next couple of days. I will post a new "Show me yours" thread with the pictures.

I am also interested in seeing what everyone else has in humidors/coolidors. Please post them if you can!

Just curious, how does $40 (US) weekly in cigar expenses fund this at Canadian prices?

Another curiousity, so you have been collecting cigars since you were 12 years old?

WHAT new post? You reallly should be more specific than that........

It seems to me there are a number of issues pending here like how were you able to have been buying cigars since you were 12 years old, three to six boxes at a time on a budget of $40.00 per month
