  1. Default Newbie - How Do I Puff Cigars?

I'm a complete newbie when it comes to cigars. So much so that I've never smoked one. I am interested in smoking cigars, but there's one thing which I'm worried about.

This is going to be a completely ridiculous question, but how exactly do I puff cigars? Do I inhale at all, or do I just blow on the end of them? Or do I something completely different?

    cut one end

light the other (suck in to get other side lit)

and smoke, enjoy the taste and DON'T inhale

    The rest will come natural.

Some Cigar shops let you smoke in them, you can ask about Cigar, recommendations and then buy one and smoke there. Just a thought.

DO NOT inhale, take a page out of the Bill Clinton playbook. I'll leave the rest up to the experts on here.

It's like using listerine, you take a sip into your mouth but don't swallow. Take the smoke into your mouth by breathing in, but don't inhale (like Clinton).

I guess the best way to describe it is to suck with your cheeks, not with your lungs. I find I block my throat with my tongue and puff on the cigar with my lips and cheeks and jaw, once I have smoke in my mouth I slowly let it roll out of my mouth or I just exhale it out quick.

Either way, the other guys are right, N E V E R inhale

I do, sometimes, exhale the smoke, or part of it, through my nose. Letting it bathe the back of my pallet. This accentuates the flavor, on my better smokes. Still not letting it hit the lungs, as that would turn me green I am afraid.

I can't seem to let the cigar smoke out of my nose unless I inhale.... *shrug* I guess I just need more practice.... Any tips to doing this?

All I do is kinda push the smoke to the back of my mouth with my tongue and then exhale through my nose, and it seems to just happen.. Not all of it goes out however, and I still blow the rest through my lips. It feels really weird at first, depending on the cigar, but I find it does wonders for the taste of some.

Yeah inhaling can get you in trouble. Mr. Clinton had the right idea. Even though he did say that if given the chance he would try it again LOL.

Well, I usually sip cigars - draw in a little smoke, let it roll around my mouth, then exhale slowly to get the most enjoyment out of the taste - but there are many ways to do it, you have to find they way you like best. Others like to leave the cigar in their mouth while they smoke, I do not, as they get all wet and I hate that.
There's only two kinds of cigars, the kind you like and the kind you don't.

    What about health risks?

As I said before, I've yet to try a cigar. In fact, I've never smoked anything in my entire life. If/When I try a cigar, I'd like it to be a long cigar. But I'd only smoke them very occasionally - maybe even less than once a month.

Would even that damage my health? And would I become addicted to cigars?

Because you don't inhale cigars, less nicotine is absorbed and there is less of a chance you'll get addicted to them that way. A friend of mine used to smoke cigs and when he lights up a cigar he will inhale for the first few hits then puff the rest of the cigar for a little nicotine fix before he enjoys the cigar itself.

I have to agree with Superman, the only addictive part of cigars that I have found is buying them. I get deliveries at least once a week.

I only inhale one puff off of every cigar. I need that beloved jolt I used to get from cigarettes, but couldn't handle inhaling every puff off of a cigar. I probably average five cigars a day. I wonder what the cancer risk from that is compared to two packs of cigarettes per day. There's so much false science being produced on everything related to smoking, we may never know for sure.

Don't worry about it. An example of someone you can do a google search on is George Burns. He smoked cigars everyday since he was 17. Never once inhaled and never smoked a cigarette. And he smoked an average 7 a day in his adult years. He lived to be 100. Now that's the life.... My opinion is, if you smoke them in a well ventilated area(ie: outside) then it doesn't affect your health at all. In my eyes, it's on par with sitting infront of a fire every night and smelling the smoke it creates. No one ever mentions the health drawbacks of that I also don't think you would become addicted even a little bit....

Smoking anything is a health risk, period. Smoke is bad for you, period. If you want to smoke, you have to come to terms with that.

That being said, cigar smoking habits tend to be less addictive than cigarrettes. This has to do with innumerable differences like frequency of smoking, inhaling, etc. Since cigar smoke isn't inhaled, it poses far less of a lung cancer and emphysema risk. But, since there is more tobacco, the tobacco is fermented, the smoke is unfiltered, and the contact time in the mouth is greatly increased, the risks for mouth and throat type cancers is greatly increased.

Don't think that it's impossible to become addicted to cigars or get cancer from them. It's very possible. If you want to smoke, simply smoke in moderation. In other words, don't smoke 5 a day, every day. I smoke about three or four a week. I make it a special occasion thing, like drinking alcoholic beverages. This also helps keep the cost reasonable.

Don't forget, real cigars, good cigars, are pure tobacco and don't have all of the additives and chemicals that cigarettes do.
