Default Cigar Smokers Rare in Central America

A friend of mine (who is from Venezuela, and has lived and worked in Central and South America during much of his youth) says that cigar smokers are pretty rare in that part of the world. That was a huge shock to me, I figured that since they make so many cigars down there they would be a pretty popular habit, but he says you see tons of cigarette smokers and very few cigar smokers, outside the rich and/or powerful.
There's only two kinds of cigars, the kind you like and the kind you don't.
