Ash vs Even Burn - Are they linked?

I've noted that more often than not, if I lose the ash and expose the central burning core the darn stick starts a run right there. No matter how well they begin their burn. I know the ash insulates and blocks the wind and I'm guessing that exposing that core is what will start a run. I've gotten to where I play this game of making a long ash just to keep the cigar burning even and not running.

How can I get more reliable burns and begin to care less 'bout my ash?

I have noticed that too. It usually burns fine after I get rid of the first ash, but about the second time around, that is when the outside of the cigar seems to stop burning. What I have found most sucessful is to knock the ash off and right away take a few larger puffs to try and get the core to keep burning the outside. Sometimes it works sometimes it does not. I have also resorted to having to relight the outer part of the cigar. Both ways does make the cigar burn hotter because you are really fueling the burn, but, it is about the only way I have kept it from tunneling near the end of the cigar.

I've found that when I "expose the core" (sounds like a line from a bad nuclear holocaust thriller), if I slow down on it for a few minutes, everybody gets happy again. That probably falls in line with your ash theory, as I'm really just letting some ash build back up...

Hey Corona, your cigar is sitting on it's ash doing nothing. I think it lacks a good work ethic. Every cigar I've ever had worked it's ash off a couple times before it was done!

Usually this problem is related to a cigar being a bit to moist or simply being very oily (especially with aged cigars). If this is happening with cigars that you haven't aged for awhile, try bringing your RH down a bit so the cigars aren't so moist. Hope this helps.
