I've found that when I "expose the core" (sounds like a line from a bad nuclear holocaust thriller), if I slow down on it for a few minutes, everybody gets happy again. That probably falls in line with your ash theory, as I'm really just letting some ash build back up...

Usually this problem is related to a cigar being a bit to moist or simply being very oily (especially with aged cigars). If this is happening with cigars that you haven't aged for awhile, try bringing your RH down a bit so the cigars aren't so moist. Hope this helps.
