Thread: novice question from the new guy

  1. Default novice question from the new guy

I am a novice cigar smoker. I have a friend who is quite a cigar aficionado. On occasion he invites me to retire to another room for a smoke while the wives do their thing. I really enjoy the flavor and aroma of a good cigar, and he has a very nice selection. My question is however, how much of the cigar should be smoked? I don't want to insult him by not smoking enough of it...nor do I want to burn my fingers. I also notice a change in flavor at a certian point. Any advice would be helpful.

Quit smoking it when your not enjoying the smoke anymore.

Quiet C makes a point. While I would generally say to stop some time after burning the last 1/3rd, just stop when you are no longer enjoying it.......

You stated that you notice a change in flavor. Well, that is usually a good thing and often happens in a good smoke. It is part of what makes it enjoyable, the fact that you have changing and evolving flavors throughout your smoking experience. Like the others said, stop smoking when it isn't good anymore.

No one said snuff it out.

Do not attempt to snuff it out.

Just set the cigar down and let it go out by itself.

Once a cigar has run its course, it should naturally extinguish itself. It's poor cigar etiquette to "butt out" a cigar as it will create an unpleasant odor for everyone around you.

As long as you smoke, say, half the stick, I can't imagine your friend getting upset. And if you don't think you can make it halfway, let your friend know... He might be giving you something that's too strong for you to enjoy!

listen, if you like cigars enough to look for and sign up for this site then you like them enough to be honest with him and talk out your smoking preferences etc

you can let him know about coming on this site and how you want to get into cigars more etc etc

this will spark a discussion on types of cigars, smoking them, etc

bring in how you like this and that or dont like this and that

talk all this out with your friend and of course do the whole thank you and "i hope im not insulting you by not smoking this extra double slap your gramma strong cigar you gave me but i just cant handle it" comments lol

remember, smoking a cigar with someone else is more than just hanging out. its got more meaning than that . . . dont mean to sound girly here but you form a deeper relationship with the other person . . . no matter what level it is, its more solidified cause the guy is telling you i would like to share my number one joy with you or, this is something i really like and i appreciate that you might like it too.

    good luck
