I suffered a middle/severe flaming in my first couple of weeks on c/s based on a misunderstanding. After the dust had settled, several people sent me some pretty generous bombs to make up for a bad first impression. The ones that particularly impressed me were the bombs from the guys
who had taken no part in the initial flaming.
Let me put it another way, I got to try some cigars I had only read about before, because some members of c/s felt badly about the way I had been treated by
other members of c/s.
Now that’s the sort of behavior that creates quite an impression on a know-nothing newbie like myself.
Credibility is everything around here. Not just individual credibility, but the credibility of CigarSmokers.com membership as a whole. A couple of bad apples, a bum trade here and there, and the whole thing just goes *phut*. That’s why the FOGs come down so hard on anyone who slips up. Seems to me that ol' ReaganYouth here has been getting a pretty easy ride. Probably because the guy he's dealing with is a stand-up guy.
When you say you want to give a gift of at least equal value you're being a little naive, for at least two reasons. First, it is a very rare trader who will send his end first to some newbie with no track record. They might be generous but they’re not nuts. Second, most of the guys who bombed me the first couple of times, if I tried to bomb them back they’d just laugh. How the hell am I, who got interested in cigars as a hobby a couple of months ago, going to be “more generous” to someone who has been smoking and collecting cigars for years? These are guys who discuss the merits of various box codes.
You can't pay these surly f

s back. Don't even try. Pay it forward.
