dark beers

Well... the obvious choice is Guinness... availible everywhere, brewed since 1759... tried and true. Warsteiner Premium Dunkel is another of my personal favorites... be sure it's the dark and not regular Warsteiner... huge difference in taste there.

Hmm... "dark" beers... These guys have suggested stouts, which are often a good choice if you're not really a beer drinker, but they can be a little filling.

You may want to look in the direction of a brown or mild (Newcastle being a classic example; Pete's Wicked probably fits into this category as well).

Porter might be a good option, as well. Porter tends to be a lighter version of a stout ("historically" it's a pale and a stout blended together, like a black & tan). Porters tend to be a little roasty, but if you're a smoker, you might like that flavor.

Completely out of left field, you may want to try a Wit (White), weizen, or hefeweizen (wheat beers) might be a good call. These beers are completely hit or miss, but a lot of people that "don't like beer" tend to like hefeweizen. Hoegaarden and Blue Moon Belgian White are easy examples, but anything that has "white" or "wheat" or "weizen" in the title works.

I hardly know the difference between a stout and porter, lager or ale. Alls I know is I like beer...all kinds.

Try Shiner Bock. It's dark.
There's a Newcastle Brown that's mighty fine too.

I prefer my dark beers to be more bitter. I like St. Pauli's Girl Special Dark and Guiness Extra Stout. I love Guiness as a lighter alternative. Strongbow anyone?

New Castle is my personal favorite. Brooklyn Brown Ale is a good one too.

The best Guiness I had in North America was at Erin's Pub in St. Johns, Newfoundland. Time your trip for Oct. 29 this year and you can also attend the George St. Mardi Grais. where a good time will be had by all.

I definitly agree with you about Erin's! Another great spot is the Duke of Duckworth. It is close by and has a Guinness to die for!

Are you in Newfoundland often?

September 28th, so it'll be here pretty soon, a shame it falls on a wed. instead of the weekend, but oh well. As for the "white" "wheat" "weizen" Think they would be hard to come by?

I went to the Guinness site and I think I'm going to go with the Guinness Extra Stout if the bars have them.

Beer selection is very hit or miss. Some places have Bud or Bud Lite. Some places will have a beautiful selection. Some places will have all the American standards, but one or two standouts. Some places can tell you "it's like Bud, but not as good" and others can go on for hours about any particular brew.

If you find some (real) brewpubs, you'll find some of your best beers and the most knowledgeable hopheads you'll ever meet. If you're planning to sit and drink, I'd hunt down a brewpub. If you're planning on barhopping, look for buzzwords on the taps, or just order a nice, safe Guinness. :)

Quiet, seeing as though you're in Ohio, look for Great Lakes Brewing Company beers and Goose Island Brewery beers. Heck, there may be some Bell's Point Brewery stuff. The first is based out of clevehole, the second out of Chi-town, and the third out of Michigan (I'm assuming Bell's Point). All there stuff in general is good. Any of their ales are leaps and bounds ahead of and MGD, Bud, or other crappy American 3:2 beer. It's like the Amstel Light commercial depicts, light beers are good for, well, watering the plants.

Avoid anything in clear or light green bottles...

Light is very damaging to beer and most bars keep said beers in coolers with glass doors and sometimes even (gasp) lighting!

Not sure if Sam Adams black lager is in Ohio or not but it has the same flavor characteristics, but milder, as stouts and it not as "heavy". That being said my favorite beer is Guinness, so you can never go wrong there.
