Although, I'm still confused how #22 Florida State goes against #3 Penn State!
ACC Champ is an automatic bid to the BCS/Orange Bowl, EXCEPT the years that the Orange Bowl is the National Championship game. Fla. State WON the ACC championship (don't aks me how but they did, kinda like how the FOCK did Georgia win the SEC title but nonetheless, they did). The match up is the most worthy opponent they could find that would accept the bid to play there. #3 in the nation is indeed the most worthy opponent NOT already bound by their league championship to a certain bowl.

However it looks like NEXT year, there will be an additional National Championship game.

Sooo they are going to add another bowl to the list? So instead of a 4 bowl rotation, it's turning into a 5 bowl rotation?

Orrr are they doing something like a playoff system?

There will still be the four bowls, Orange, Sugar, Sugar & Rose BUT the following weekend, a National Championship game will be played at one of those sites so each year, there will be two games at the site. They call this a "double hosting" format. Next year, it will look like this:

    Following 2006 Regular Season:
    Jan. 1, 2007 - Fiesta Bowl
    Jan. 1, 2007 - Rose Bowl
    Jan. 2, 2007 - Orange Bowl
    Jan. 3, 2007 - Sugar Bowl
Jan. 8, 2007 - National Championship Game (Phoenix)

This starts next year. I think it's fucking stupid. I see no need for an additional National Championship game. While many people do not like the current BCS format, I do indeed like it. I see NO NEED for a college football playoff system.
