Default Property crime rant....car broken in to last night

Fuck I hate petty crime bullshit. Came out to my car at 6:00am this morning and the drivers door is open. Glove box open and centre console open. Nothing taken except for a buck or two in change. In reality, I'm pretty lucky because there was no damage to the car and they didn't open my garage with the opener I keep in the car (I know...stupid). I think it must have been a kid or group of kids looking for $ for whatever their habit of choice is. I saw at least 5 other cars on my street with doors open as well. Going to file a report with the police once I talk to my brother-in-law (he's a cop). They didn't take any of my CD's or sunglasses or chargers so they were after cash and easy things they can flip for cash.

What a bummer. Nothing like having someone enter and fool with your personal space. I hope you can catch the culprit.

If you have a garage, why wasn't your car in it?

You're lucky the car wasn't locked because if it was, you'd be cleaning up broken glass.

Because my garage looks like Will's basement prior to the cleanup.

In recent years, Canadian Thanksgiving is the same day as Columbus day in the USA (second Monday of October).

Well then, it can't be the tryptophan junkies! Unless they had a stash of turkeys from October to get them though until now!

In Nova Scotia, we pretty much ignore that.

Well then you should take this as a huge wake up call to clean your garage and start putting your car into it before it get vandalized or broken into again. Does your insurance company give you a discount for keeping your car in a garage? If they do and you wind up putting in a claim for theft, vandalism or it being stolen and they find out your garage hasn't had a car in it since before the Bruins won the Stanley Cup, they're going to be real pissed off at you.

Actually the garage is a project I have been working on. Even if there was nothing in my garage, my car wouldn't be in it anyway because my wife has a nicer/newer car. Hers will be in there starting tonight.

Anyway, I was lucky. Nothing but some change stolen and no damage. Reported to the police and it's done with.

LOL. The Socialists made auto insurance a part of the government (and mandatory) in B.C. decades ago. Even the most right-wing government since hasn't been able to touch something that costs residents less (on average). OTOH, such aspirational concepts like having an enclosed garage and getting a discount for using it are contrary to the egalitarian worker ideal and thus unlikely to find traction. :-)

... and yeah, we generally ignore Columbus day in Central Canada too. ;-)

That sucks, but I could never imagine leaving my car unlocked no matter where it is, hell, I even chain up my bike when it's locked in the garage.

We have bands of people that go into neighborhoods and check for open cars. They always get guns and cash. Why folks leave valuables in cars escapes me.

I seldom if ever lock my car for two reasons:

    1. There's nothing in it worth stealing.
    2. Since there's nothing in it worth stealing, I don't feel like cleaning up broken glass when the $hitbags smash the window only to find there was nothing in there worth stealing.

I've never really thought about why I don't lock my cars, but these work for me!

Wifey, on the other hand, locks her car IN the garage.

Didn't say there was, Paddy, didn't say there was ... but there's that saying: "Not to be a socialist at twenty is proof of want of heart; to be one at thirty is proof of want of head." - Georges Clemenceau

    :-)

To get back on topic, I started locking my car after some kids (I assume) put chewing gum on my (velour) car seats years ago.

The three daily drivers stay in the garage along with the '86 Jag with the blown engine.....

The rest stay out in the yard with the keys in the ignitions. If someone wants to take them AND they can get them started, they can have them including any spare change they find under the seats.
