    Default DOM. REBULBIC brands.

howdy. I am going to Punta Cana, in the dominican rep. on feb.9th. Canada customs says that im allowed to bring back 50 cigars per person. There are 3 of us going, so im allowed to bring back 6 boxes of 25.

Im not familliar with anything from the D.R. and any info on them would be awsome. Are fakes here commen? I know NOT to buy "cubans" from there, because they ARE fake. And not to buy from venders on the beach because they are often stolen garbage, or dried out banana leafs.

What are my chances of buying a fake in a large certified cigar shop?

What would you guys recommend for the top brands, that are semi- affordable.

I want to buy 1 or 2 boxes of cohibas, what do i nee dto know about dominican cohibas? Do they have the same gold band as the cubans, or are they strictly "red dot"

Are any of these fishy looking? Or are they all the real deal. There seams to be alot of differant packaging.

-the non- gold lettering band. (bad?)

please name some top desired brands, and what i hsould look out for.

    Thanks for the help!

*** also, has anyone here ever been to the punta cana region of the D.R.? any paticular shops that i should check out?

i have been to the D.R. at least a dozen times...to santo domingo, santiago, puerte plata, juan dolio, and punta cana......you are correct...don't buy what you're being told are cubans...they are fake....most cigars in the D.R. are free-zone...they are exported....buy leon jimenes and la aurora...both excellent cigars from the oldest factory in the country (1903).....

in some of the shops, you may find fuente or fonseca...both excellent cigars, but not as readily available....anything else is questionable....have fun...

alright, thanks, ill check out the 2 that you stated. Whats "buy directly from hex" mean?

-also, should i travel into the nearest town (Higuey) in search of a shop instead of the souvenier shops near the resorts? I assume it would be cheaper in a none- tourest area.

Hex is the man in charge around here! He also has a nice little cigar store online...caminoviejo.com

Well after reading the forums here since I joined I think I have a sense of the defining attitudes on this board. If I follow the trend then I believe this should be my appropriate response:

I have tried the fonsecas and fuente but this was some time ago. I have just gotten a humidor for Christmas so am slowly getting back into cigars (I had one a few years ago but it got knocked off a table . I'll pick those up and give them a try, thanks for the recommendations. What traits/taste would you say they have? Which is your favourite?

i love anything that is fonseca.....fonseca,fonseca vintage, vegas de fonseca (awesome cameroon wrapped cigar...nicely priced), fonseca series f....la aurora and leon jimes come from the oldest factory in the D.R. (1903)...they're well made and flavorful, which is what you should be looking for....i won't deny that macanudo has a name...but there are hundreds of brands that are better, imho.
if you really enjoy a macanudo,i'd suggest you save your money and eat m&m's.....

Not a big candy fan myself so it looks like I will have to sample those... lucky for me there is a very nice cigar shop about 30 feet from where I work. :D
