Thread: I am not the CigarPass Hacker

I've confirmed with Rod that this was a scripted attack, capitalizing on a hole in Invision. I seriously doubt that a human was ever involved, and it certainly wasn't personal. Source was Russia, at least a Russian script. The source IP was spoofed.

Hex, I'm not close enough to know if Rod made an accusation. You both seem to be men of integrety. Maybe you can mend your fences, but at worst, I hope you can both agree to despise each other and get on with life.

I woke up this morning and had 2 emails and a PM from different people informing me that Rod was making these sort of statements in private.

Something along the lines of "I certain Miguel Gonzalez from CigarSmokers is behind these attacks, we may be in for a legal battle" blah blah blah. (words changed to protect the sources)

While I'm happy they know who the hacker is, it does trouble me that these kind of statements were ever made. I'm not at all the kind of person who is going to break into anyones site for any reason. I would expect an apology, you have my number Rod.

If you need any help analyzing the logs or anything, I would be more then happy to help out.

Every time I start to really feel at home on a board, it seems to get into a big war with others/offshoots. At least I'm on the good side of it this time. Last time I ended up leaving to a smaller board. (This experience was not a Cigar BB)

Holy crap! CC can ban HIMSELF!

Man, I step away for a week or so and come back to Cigar Armageddon! hex is a straight up guy. No chance he hacked into someone else's board.

Some people love to get shit started it seems.
Do not kill, do not rape, do not steal. These are principles, which every man of every faith can embrace. These are not polite suggestions, these are codes of behavior and those of you that ignore them will pay the days cost. There are varying degrees of evil. We urge you lesser forms of filth not to push the bounds and cross over into true corruption, into our domain. But if you do you, one day you will look behind you and you will see we three, and on that day, you will repent.

Hex, this doesn't have anything to do with this current situation but if you ever need to run an IP addy on someone causing trouble, I would be more than happy to check if they are a member at Cigar Family. I am a moderator over there and have access to IP's.

    Hex,

Looks like the IP was spoofed to a Russian address. Got no beef with you. Sorry for the misunderstanding. Been a crappy week, though I'm sure things will become normal again soon in the cigar world.

    All the best to you!

The pattern is pretty typical. Someone finds an exploit in a piece of software or an OS and then decides to try it out somewhere that hasn't been patched.

Something similar like this happened to my friend's unix server about a year ago. Someone found a known exploit in the Apache server and decided to go to town with it.

    Same case here I'm sure.
For what it's worth, I can verify that there is a security hole in some versions of Invision BB -- we've been in touch with the company, and are upgrading our forums as well, to prevent the kind of hack that hit CigarPass.com

Typically the motivation is money... I'll explain. People search out forum software vulnerabilities, then hack into them, and infect as many members of the site as possible.

The viral cocktail that the are forced to quaff allows people to use their machines as "zombies" to send out spam... for which the person controlling said computers is paid money.
