cedar wrapped cigars

I couldn't find anything with a search, so I thought I would ask here.

From reading other posts, I have noticed that mold seems more common on cigars with a cedar wrap. Does this seem true to you guys? If so, should I remove the cedar wrap?

Every cigar that Ive had with mold had cedar except a Work of Art Maduro from Fuente,that had just cellophane.

It is powdery white spots that brushed off easily.I cannot see it being plume when the date on the box it came from was not even 3 months old.From what I was told/read,bloom or plume is usually evident on a cigar that has over a years time in perfect RH%/Temp.Maybe someone can elaborate on this too.

Plume is powdery and is brushed off easily. It is also crystal in nature. On domestic cigars it's hard to know their exact age. I bought a box of Cuesta Rey Tuscany, a tubed cigar, off the shelf of my local shop. Every one of those smokes was plumed out...Nice surprise.

I have never had a cedar wrap cigar with mold on it. I have had a few cedar wrapped Fuentes that appeared to have cedar resin on the wrapper. They were from last years "Special Cigars"...King B and Anejo. I just daubed off the resin from the cigar and smoked it with no noticable problem.

Seems like I read the Fuentes had a problem with their cedar sleeves were not cured properly which caused the problem.

Almost forgot...Cedar sleeves are supposed to help in asorbing excess moisture. I guess an improperly cured cedar sleeve would not do this as it is exuding its own moisture.

Cedar sleeves also add a bit of cedar taste to the cigar. Some people like it...Some don't. I do. I also light my cigar with a cedar sleeve if my cigar has one.

Great info Sarge,I have seen the crystal forms and the powdery forms,but I guess from the misinformation I consumed,I thought it was mold,young mold maybe.Glad thats cleared up a bit.
The one with the crystal plume was indeed sweet and tastey!

Interesting. I have never tried that Sarge. Do you leave the sleeve on just for the lighting or smoke it with it on all the way down

i've never encountered any mold on cedar wrapped cigars either.. Mind you i've only ever tried Romeo y julietta's cedros that are wrapped, but still, no mold... i dont think cigars have to be overly aged for plume to be present though do they?

I prefer the cedar wrapped cigars , but I've never had one with mold on it . I've had Fuente's , Fonseca's , Gurkha's , Rocky Patel's and others never with a problem of mold . Only twice have I had mold problems and both were maduro wrapper's .
