I don't know about a specific thread, but here's my advice:

Find a reputable cigar shop
Ask the employee/owner to pick out some smokes for you
Ask them to cut them for you
If they don't give you matches, ask for them

Any good cigar shop is going to be able and willing to help you choose cigars. Tell them you're a newbie, you've never smoked cigars before. I suggest 5 or so cigars in the $5 range.

If no one is able or willing to give you suggestions, about face and walk out.

Don't worry about feeling like a twit. I ask for suggestions every time I walk into a cigar shop. Some of my favorite smokes started out as suggestions from cigar shop owners.

Most newbs are obsessed with proper lighting technique. Don't stress it. If you get it lit, you're good. You have plenty of time to refine your lighting technique, and there's no "proper" way to do it.
