Unfortunately in the last few years they have gained not only national but also international attention. The BBC did a story on them several months ago. Fred Phelps was at one time a well know civil rights attorney but was disbarred. Many of his children continue to practice law and manage to stop almost every attempt to limit their activities. They are by most definitions a cult. The group is mostly Fred's extended family, children, grandchildren, greatgrand children and in-laws. Their church, the Westboro Baptist Church, is in a 2 block walled compound where most of them also live.

Monday's front page, of our paper over here, showed a pic of the Vietnam Vet's MC talking in D.C. The article said the MC is now volunteering to escort funeral processions of soldiers, and provide a buffer/cordon for the funeral service's. I loved it...I think that it is fitting that the Vet's have volunteered.

They've been up here in Illinois as well - same deal - bikers drown them out with their exhaust noise and blocked them with huge American flags.

There's only a few of those numbnuts, but they manage to cause quite a stir no matter where they show up. They told people they were coming to protest in front of a high school because one of the school's gay after school groups won some kind of national recognition. Had the whole place full of counter protesters, but no church members...
