I thought the point of your post was "if you think about it really was a tie. I think this recent rule change regarding overtime in College football is ridiculous.". I didn't realize the point of your post was "the tiebreaker system in college football is very new." I guess I need to reread it so I will be able to "figure it out."
Also, a quick google search brought up that the overtime system was introduced for D1 in 1996, which, in my opinion, is not really that recent. (Note: this is just my opinion) I didn't research the rule change thoroughly so I might be wrong as to when it was enacted.

Some people were saying that boise state deserved to play in the national title game... Imagine boise state vs the buckeyes... Now, I'm no fan of buckeyes, but I know a good team when I see one. Okies are one thing but they aren't playing at the level to make an exciting bowl game with a top 15 team.![]()
Boise played well and beat Oklahoma, it happens some teams come better prepared. But there is an extent when your teams athletic ability will not match up to anothers. I think Oklahoma belongs in the Big Ten not the Big 12. They are a Big Ten type school.
Sorry to boise state fans...

You remember the Choke at Doak Bill? That was probably one of the most memorable ties that I can remember (I was at that game)
