buying a new laptop

Lenovo is an IBM and is a great machine.

I use a Sony. It is a great mchine but may be a bit pricey to a college student. I also had a Dell that worked just fine. But I do like this new Sony the better than the Dell.

I suggest Lenovo first for price, if you can afford a bit more go for a Sony.

A buddy of mine has a Toshiba. He swears by it.
I think I saw one at costco for 999, but I didn't look too closely at what the "guts" were so I couldn't tell you if it was a good deal or not.
