Chase and HBO need to learn what a finale is suppose to be. IMHO they could have stopped at the last episode, at least everyone would think that because of the life Tony led, he was forced to run and hide from the feds, and other mobsters. In sitting there in disbelief, I thought of countless "time fillers" in the last episode, was this all they could come up with.
On a side note, did any one watch John fron Cincinnati. In another blockbuster move, HBO decides that have a shows premiere wins it fans over with the number of times F--k can be used. I like strong language and how it can illistrate a point, but damn, they went out of the way to use it, after I noticed it, it made the show seem awkward.
I wasn't expecting a big "wrap up everything" finale from Chase. He's publicly stated that he had no intention of tying up everything in a nice, neat package, so I was not disappointed.
I think the final scene was a way of showing how Tony looks at the world. You're seeing things in the diner from his eyes. Everyone is under suspicion, they could be a potential hitman. Every time the door opens, he has to look to make sure they're not about to blow his head off. He lives in a life full of suspicion and paranoia, and will until his final breath.
There's only two kinds of cigars, the kind you like and the kind you don't.
Yeah I was a little disapointed as well with the ending. It's too bad they didn't have a real ending. (I thought Tony was going to get killed in front of his family just like Leotardo did).
This was brought up on another board but if you go back to where Tony and Pauly are on the boat and there discussing what do you think happens when it all over and one of them says I think it all just goes black...thats the correlation. However they wasted so much time with junk I think that old scene could of been added to something in last night show maybe Tony and Pauly reminiscing. Then at the end when the screen goes black incorporate white words roiling off the black ...."I think when it's over it just goes black".... something to leave the viewer with a little closer. It was poor writing for sure.![]()

I believe the point was to not leave the viewer with closure. I think it was intended to be realistic the bad guy doesn't always lose but that doesn't make him the winner either. Chase didn't want there to be a message in his show and if he had killed Tony it would have been the typical cliche crime doesn't pay thing, but the fact of the matter is that sometimes that just isn't true.

Back in the CA article before this last season began, Chase said, he doesn't want to paint the message "Crime doesn't pay". I watched it again last night, and since I know it is not going to change, I am begining to be ok with it. I still think it was a awlful finale, but there was attempts to wrap up alot of loose ends (A.J.'s future, Junior, T looking out for Janice). Maybe after a few years when Chase and all of the others are away from it for a while, they could sit down for a movie (Unlikely, but you never know).
Personally, I thought the show and ending sucked, but looking at what's been written on other boards (as Cin said) there's people who read alot more into it and it starts to make sense.
One board said the ending was left to your interpretation and whether or not a movie comes out (which I think will happen) Chase is left with an out.
People on several boards said the screen going black was Tony getting whacked.
Someone on a radio station here said the screen going black was you (the viewer) getting whacked (interesting read on the ending).
One person said (and this one makes the most sense to me) Tony had one shirt on when he walked into the diner, and then saw himself sitting there in the booth, dressed differently. Was he already dead?
I was thinking it was poorly written, but the ending leaves so many possibilities open, may it was, in fact, a genius at work!!! That being said, I still thought the show and ending sucked.
I had predicted Tony would have Phil whacked and Tony himself wouldn't die, leaving an opening for the movie (is he dead, or isn't he?) in which Tony would try to take over New York.
As a reply to that theory, someone posted the possibility of a prequel, a young Tony watching his father and Uncle Junior rise to power. I like that and can see it as a great show.

Hi. My name is Jim and I like to shave!
I'm trying my hardest not to read this thread or any of the media commentary! I missed the last 2 episodes because of my trip to Costa Rica. I found the torrent’s, downloaded them and watched The Blue Comet last night (second to last episode)..
I'm going to try to watch the encore of the final on HBO tonight. The AVI on my laptop was ~lacking.

On a side note, I'm planning to meet friends Friday night at Holstens, the place of the final scene, it is about 15 minutes from my home, on another side note, the Soprano home is about a mile from where I grew up. A real tourist trap, cars are always stopping and snapping pics.

Maybe, I am a little weird, but I kinda think that would be cool to live in the house
It certainly is, I heard ahwile back that is was David Chase' home some years ago, (he was known as David DeCeasere... spelling??) another tidbit, the home is right next door to where "The Uni-Bomber" Theodore Kaczynski mailed the letter bomb and killed the Advertising executive, Thomas Mosser

I fanally had time to watch the last episode. My wife taped it for me. it was to the point where they were in the diner and his son put the onion ring in his mouth and the recording stopped! I said WTF! what happened! how does it end! Does tony get shot! My wife says you missed about 20 seconds do you want to know. I said yes of coarse I do. She says to me, his daughter comes through the door and the screen goes black. I was like ya and........ what else.![]()
