Hi Everyone. I tried to post a greeting a couple of days ago and it didnt make it to the board (thinking I was too new?)
Anyhow, I'm John. A 38 year old full time single parent of three. Two adolescent daughters and an eight year old boy.
I live in the People's Republic of Kalifornia in a town called El Dorado Hills, which is along the highway 50 corridor heading toward Lake Tahoe, but only about 900 feet off the Sacramento Valley floor.
I'm a politically incorrect retired police officer (injured after a decade) who does all the things people hate. I drive a large V8 powered Pickup, a large V8 powered car, I fish, hunt, participate in shooting sports and, of course...smoke cigars.
I first became a BOTL during the beginning of the boom back in the early 90's. Like most people, I walked into my local cool new cigar shop--Willow Glen Cigars--and proudly stated that I was "looking for something mild". They sold ma a nice Connecticut Shade Macanudo. I'm pretty sure that was the last Macanudo I smoked, although I've been gifted a few over the years that are now about 15 years old still resting in one of my two humidors. Not that I hate them, it's just these days I prefer something with some more pep.
I'd say my favorite "regular smoke" is either the Punch Gran Cru, although they are a bit tougher to find for me these days, or the Arturo Fuente Maduro Rabusto. The Punch pretty much the only Honduran stick I actually REALLY enjoy and Fuente offers long term consistency at a fair price.
Interestingly, back when I was first smoking, brands like CAO and Ghurka weren't near as popular as they are today. I liken then to Starbucks. Good product, but ultra-slick marketing has brought it to the forefront. I do enjoy the Brazillia, however. I've yet to actually smoke a Ghurka but I did buy one last weekend so I guess I'll find out!
Luckily for me, I have a cousin, who is more like my brother (neither of us have siblings) and he's as big an ash-hole (maybe moreso) than I am! So, I'm fortunate that I have someone to enjoy a good cigar with. Otherwise, when the kids go to their moms, I'm lounging in the hot tub puffing away. It's a great way for me to forget how shitty things can be sometimes!
OK that's my 2 minute bio! Glad to be here and have the opportunity to connect with a few people who enjoy my pass time!
