Thread: beads and tubes

  1. Default beads and tubes

I had a fella ask me this question and I told him i would ask all of you to see what you thought as i am very new at this. He also has the 65% beads which are working well for him. However he opens his humidor alot, losing humidity quickly at times and was wondering about this question? He has some 70% drimystat tubes sitting around and is wondering if it will screw up his homidor if he sits them in there with the beads. Or would it just regulate the whole thing around 68%.....More or less he is wondering if he can mix the two products to help his humidor recover faster..........onenuttynurse...He is patiently waiting for the answer before he does this.....

Probably the best solution would be to get more 65% beads, as that will help it recover to 65% quicker.

Some of the FOGs should be around soon and give you a definite answer though.

This is based on my opinion:

I would not mix the two together. Beads work to keep the humidity stable. 65% beads will take in and release moisture to keep it at 68%. If you have 70% beads in there, they are trying to do the same thing. It would turn into a battle of epic proportions! If it's one thing you don't want it's the constant fluctuating of humidity in your humidor. You don't want the cigars taking in and releasing moisture constantly.

The solution: don't open the humidor so much.

I think the beads will be enough, opening the humidor really only releases humidity from the air inside, cigars release humidity at a MUCH slower rate. Properly moistened beads will quite quickly replace humidity in the air lost due to opening. Conditions of cigars don't change as quickly as the reading of a hygrometer.

That's fine. Don't worry about. I have 65% beads and a 70% packet (Bovinda - sp?) and my beads will dry out and the humidity will still drop to 60% or. If you stick the stat tube in there it will will act as a sort of stop-gap and the RH won't get too low.

But again, I wouldn't worry about it.

Does your friend have OCD for opening and closing it a lot? I wouldn't stress over your cigars too much. They hold their own unless it's a DRASTIC change in humidity and/or temperature.

Whenever I get new sticks or need to play cigar tetris to fit the new sticks in my coolidor, I normally have it open for a prolonged amount of time and close it, and then open it again to see if I have more room for more sticks.

Plus, hopefully you'll be smoking the sticks in the humidor/coolidor in the near future. If you are trying to age certain cigars, that may get affected by the constant opening and closing, but are you up to that point yet?

This was a question that some a fella had asked me when he heard my discussion about waiting for my hearfelt beads to arrive. I have no clue how much he opens and closes it. Myself, i am waiting for the beads and new digital hygrometer to arrive so i can set up the humidor for my relative..anyway,,,thanks for all the input...You guys are fabulous......onenuttynurse
