I have been thinking on this question too. Being a newb still myself... I think it has a lot to do with product presentation, their product looks nice, they have much variety of sticks to choose from, and the "Gurkha" name and lable seem to carry a certain mystique to them. For what it is worth... I was really into trying them too in the beginning. I guess hype can pay off for companies... and then again looks can be deceiving too. Roger.
Just another day at the office!

Head over to the exchange section and find the newbie sampler thread -- someone was kind enough to sticky it, so it's always near the top...

It may partly be the fact that they are media whores who buy up full page ads in every cigar rag they can find. IMHO they are way over rated and over priced. I'll take a Gispert maduro toro or El Rey del Mundo robusto Large at about $4.00 over a $10.00 Gurkha shitstick anyday.
It will always be a battle a day between those who want maximum change and those who want to maintain the status quo.

I too wanted to try a Ghurka when I first started. My only reason: The guy on the band looks like a badass.

I can agree with them not being shy about putting their name out there. Ghurka came up more than anyone else in my initial searches.

I started smoking Oliva Serie G and Serie O maduros when I first started. I thought they were great then, and still are.

    Just my $0.02.

When I first started getting into cigars more then just the occasional smoke, I found a good local B&M that became my haunt. I bothered the guys there quite a bit and when I had some money to burn they'd help me put together a "sampler" from their humidor. Yes I paid a premium for the smokes, but I got a lot of helpful information and I enjoyed it.
