I prefer a nice heavy imperial stout with my cigars over the lighter brews.

Double Bag rolls in at 7.2% & is pretty thick on the palette. That ain't no slouch. Actually, Long Trail makes a lot of good stuff (the only one I don't like is their IPA.) Yeah, it's not 12%-19% imperial stout...but really I find an IS overpowering flavorwise to a lot of cigars.

Have any of you tried or have any thoughts on The Abyss by Deschutes?

Really? That's interesting - are you putting anything on it sides standard brew ingredients? these have licorice (i believe it was) and i taste ever so slightly -right? Friggen headache, but determined, I managed to pull a case this round and just finally tasted one from the current release. I am a pretty big fan of Deschutes regular Black Butte porter - one of my "house beers".
The Abyss is pretty damn good now, not sure about the best after a year jibberish. not like the 11% was all in the face either.
My wife bought me a bottle in fall 2009. When I tried it, it tasted a bit harsh (too much alcohol bite). Part way through I saw on the label that it was best enjoyed after November or so of 2010.
So, I bought another one and let it sit for a year. When I tried it a month or so ago, it was awesome. Very smooth and previously absent flavors came out in bloom.
I tried a pint in a pub a couple weeks ago. I assumed it was a more recent batch than what I'd had before. It was good, but not as good as the aged bottle I had.

The 2009 batch/release had some contamination issues. It sounded like the entire release may have had issues and how the bottles were stored/kept after the release may have lessened or worsened the said issue.
Good to hear you had one that wasn't completely off.
Either had a bad one, then a good one and/or the aging really helped. All I know is that the '09 with a year of aging was awesome.
May have to buy another couple 22s and drink one right away and age the other a year and see how it differs. I should do the same test with a couple accompanying full-body maduros.

Awesome. I picked up a barrel of this stuff for a buddy at work. He was THRILLED at the price I got it up here in our depressed economic county (that's independent of the "recession".
I went ahead and got a case of it at cost later, and split up the 6 packs. Wish I would have just kept it for myself. 5 cases were there when I got it yesterday. Down today for a keg of Yuengling Boc beer (seasonal) and there was 1 left.
