I was just surfing around, and found this site:

I thought it was cool to see how, what, where they get the briar wood for pipes.

Yeah, You can get a nice pipe for the cost of a piece without the work.
Unless you have a killer source for briar, you really won't save any money. Add to that the difficulty of briar to work, making your own can be a cool conversation piece but far more of a pain in the ass than it's worth.
**Disclaimer: My bench still has a half done pipe on it from June **
Yeah, I have no intention of making my own pipe....ever. I just thought it was a cool read about the source & manufacture of the raw briar.

I'd like to try it sometime but I'm no woodworker so I need to get some really cheap pieces to destroy before I stumble into making something usable.
Here's another option for making your own pipe.

I want to try to make a pipe out of juniper wood... I think it would be interesting. I also thought of making one in cherry wood.
Just another day at the office!
Pipe kits are a great way to get a start in pipe making. Try PIMO they have a lot of stuff there. You will need something to shape with i started with an electric drill with a sanding disc and a dremel tool. Remember to keep the stem in the shank while shaping so you get a smooth transition.
Most of all figure out what works for you. If you do decide to carve your own feel free to ask any question you may have, I'll try to the best of my abilities to answer them. GOOD LUCK.

I've mad 10 this year and lost some picture when I updated my phone. I'm still improving. I can go from block to finished in about six total hours.
I like the last two the best...Especially the straight. Nice work on all.
Some really nice work by Sapo. I've often considered buying a hobby block to smoke as-is, and then Chris Askwith carved this one and charged somewhere around $250 for it, so apparently I wasn't too crazy.
