There have been screwed up people for a long time now I think. We just hear about them more (New telecommunications infrastructure makes it all possible!). Society is less segregated and more congested as well. There's less buffer between good and bad people.
Remember back in the 90's when the two young British boys kidnapped, tormented, possibly sexually assaulted, and killed that cute three year old toddler (James Bulgar) by the railroad tracks for a thrill? Tell me that evil doesn't make your stomach twist into knots! Know what they got for it? A stint in Juvie, a free education, and new identities all paid for by the taxpayers. What a deterrent for future monsters, huh?
Before that, it gets plenty worse. All the way back to the wage slavery and horrid living/working conditions of the turn of the century. People dying constantly and being cheated/robbed often, was a fact of life.
There was a golden period in the 50's when things were better I think, but that was pretty short lived when you look at the rest of history.
