With deer season opening up in three days, I'm getting all excited

Just wanted to share one of my other passions

Here are some of the arrows I have built over the past three years

Target arrows, weight-matched to within .5 grain 8-)


Hopefully, One or two of these will pass through a deer this season

I have always wanted to go deer hunting, but I am more of a gun-guy. Went duck hunting a few times last season, and considered deer hunting with a slug in my 12-gauge, but should probably get a gun. I really want to hunt bears, so I would rather buy a bit bigger gun than one strictly for deer-hunting, but have been talked down from a .375 to a 30.06 by friends and family. The wife continues to give me the look like I'm nuts, which I probably am, but it's what I want to do.

What's deer season like there? I remember growing up in Louisiana, and having friends in Arkansas, it seemed like deer season lasted months. Out here, it's all lottery, you can only take one, and the season is very short.

The season here is one of the longest in the country, lasting from August 15th through December 31st.

Someone was right to steer you to the 30.06, you can get ammunition in a wide range of bullet styles / weights, and will be suitable for any north American big game. If I had to have only one hunting rifle, it would be the .06!

I really like the closeness you get with archery, making a 200 yard shot with a rifle is damn impressive, but getting a wary deer into bow range, (inside 40 yards), is VERY exciting! I have only taken one deer with the bow, but let me tell you this, there is nothing like it in the world! You see him coming, slowly, SLOWLY, while he's behind a tree, or looking away, try to stand up quietly, knees all shaking, sweating... waiting for him to walk into the shooting lane, trying to draw a 70lb bow without making any sudden movements... holding the draw while you settle the proper pin on the vitals, concentrating on a pure release form... Click-WHACK! the sound of a perfect shot! Your arrow passes clean through the lungs or heart, and the deer jumps straight up and starts running before he hits the ground. Then the hard part comes... waiting for at least a half hour before you climb down so as not to spook him into running any further. He runs a path back the way he came, about 100 yards or so, and as his lungs fill with blood, he'll fall over and expire fairly quickly... meanwhile, you heart is beating a mile a minute, and you can barely stand up, don't forget you're probably 25 feet up in a tree

I had a bow when I was younger but sold it for my 30-30. I want to get another. Maybe next season.

As far as the 30 06 - It can do anything you want in the states.

I myself need a slug gun for this season. I'm finally in the position to take some time off during this hunting season and the local spots are shotgun/muzzle loader and bow only. Also handgun. Hunted locally with my 357 last year but no dice.

okay now we are talking. i cant wait to post pics on the mulies here in utah and you tree guys have to find a better hobbie sitting bathed in elk pissdressed in camocalling that bull in is the best you have to look out for the blak bear stalking you BTW d i want some of that white tail in a bomb best deer i have ever had nice job on the arrows havent bow hunted in years , your the man

That pretty much seals the deal for me as far as a general hunting rifle. Originally, I was looking at .458's, but that doesn't make much sense for what I'm looking to hunt. My brother is in the military, but his suggestions are illegal for me to buy. the .06 is also a good deal more affordable, even if I do have to get a custom stock (I'm a pretty big guy).

We only get 11 days. One deer. Centerfire, muzzleloader, or bow only.

It's getting to be prime fishing season here. I've been busy with that.

Yeah the 06 is the way to go. If I hadn't bought the 30-30, and I do like it, I would have bought a 06. If I ever go west or elk or pull a moose license I'll go bigger but for now, no need. I need the 12 gauge first.

After the 12 g. I'm going back to a bow. The season in NH starts a whole 2 months earlier than for the gun and you can get two more tags.
