    Default Oasis XL fried?

Hi. I'm new to this forum, but not to forums in general
I used the search function, but couldn't easily discern anything about my issue
    So here it is:

I have an Oasis XL for my humidor (that I just posed in another thread)
I notice that thing running an awful lot. I charged it with water, and upon plugging it back in, it runs and runs and runs.

I went to the website, and it said that maybe water was blocking the pickup holes, so I went over that to make sure it was ok.

Also, the digital readout seems to just scroll through numbers erratically. A day later, its not doing that.

If I open the door, and hit the view button, it says about 71.2
I close the door, and I hear the thing running every 5 mintues

    Is all of this normal?

    Thanks,
    Will

The Oasis XL is rated for up to 300 cigars. You don't really need the air circulation for a small humidor. Be sure the fan motor does not heat up. You could be increasing the temperature which in turn causes a faster evaporation. I would dump the pump and use a half pound of 70% beads.

Welcome to the board from Kansas. Sorry, I can't help with your question as I don't use the Oasis.......I'm sure someone will be along to try and help.

Is this the 1000 count glass cabinet? If so, then two things:
    1. double-check how your door seal is working;
    2. move the unit more towards the center - you're blocking one side of the fan holes with the unit in the corner.

I suspect that once the unit is not against a wall, then it will stop feeding back on itself and become less erratic.

Having a unit run for quite a long while after opening/closing such a large door is normal in the dry season (winter). Do you know what the ambient (room) RH is?

I don't know the room humidity, but it must be dry. The seal is in good shape. I'll try moving the unit & see what happens.

I'm not sure its 1000 count... I modeled it after one I saw on the internet (Ivy-Hall priceton or something).

I'll edit my humidor post with some details about it.

    Thanks,
    Will

I think DW may have answered this for you. If your oasis is only rated for up to 300 cigars, it's not the right one for your cabinet. If that is a 1000 cigar cabinet that's a lot of air to humidify(even without 1000 smokes in it). I have a feeling the Oasis XL is working over-time to try and compensate for the large area. I think the Oasis XL Plus is rated for 1000 cigars.

Okay, had a closer look at the pics, and I think the CO is pretty close to its limit, but should handle that cabinet if the seal is good (don't forget the window seal). If you were getting a new unit, the next size up (XL Plus) or clone of an XL Plus (e.g., CI's Hydra 'clone') would have probably been a better fit. OTOH, the XL controls RH year-round better than the XL plus (or Hydra).

However, I personally would put in at least one additional fan to move the humidity around a bit quicker. It looks like the only way moisturized air can move from the bottom to the top is alongside the glass in the door, so a little help would benefit. I would also probably re-locate the CO to the third shelf, as the area that needs the most - and most active - humidification is where you have your singles, i.e., the top of the humi. You may want to get the cabinet-maker to take a router to the shelves - at least the singles shelves - and slot them.

I don't think that you need beads with a full 1/2" thick spanish cedar lining. OTOH, I bet it took a couple months to fully season that much spanish cedar! BTW, with that thickness, I predict a sap run in your future (don't worry, it is normal for the sap to weep).

Not sure. I have more experience with hydra electronic humidifiers. But If I had to take a guess I would say that you are overextending the cigar oasis.

In wintertime, the air is dry and the heat is pumping its hard enough to keep humidors stable. Using a humidifer rated for 300 cigars on a cabinet for 1000 is probably your problem. Get a CO 2 or a hydra lg.

Ok, so Nobody sofar feels that my humidifier is fried, its just too small.

Correct? I was trying to find out if the thing is broke.

    On that note,

It seemed fine this summer (more humid) and maybe I can add a supplemental humidifcation device in the winter (beads)?

I mean, the friggin' thing (oasis) was 90-100 bucks, and I'd rather spend that on cigars IMO.

All my smokes seem fine. Smoke fine, taste fine, don't crack... I acutally believe a box of El Rey de Mundos got "rehabed" being in there for a month or so. They had a TERRIBLE draw out of the box, and are now one of my favorites.

    Default Thanks

    Thanks for all the replies.

I'll try moving the oasis around...

Brain Fart: It IS an XL Plus... That should change things.

I thought about cutting slots in the singles trays. I can do that myself.
Airflow also occurs up the back inside of the humidor. The shelves don't go flush to the back.

Do you really think I'll get cedar bleed? It took Randy (carpenter) over a year to build the thing for me

If that's the case, It seems like it's working fine if the Rh is at 71. Why don't you test the other areas of the cabinet with digital hydrometers where the Oasis isn't sitting. That's what I would do before cutting holes that may not be needed. It's a nice looking cabinet though.

    Btw, welcome from NY.

Ah, was hard to see if the shelves were flush. The slots are less likely to be needed then. I'd still want an auxiliary fan - you can still find Oust fans (e.g., at Heartfelt) for a quick convenient solution.

As for cedar bleed, nobody expects it, just wanted you to know not to worry if it does. You've got a lot of cedar in there!

I have leftover computer fans & the like. I can rig something if necessary. I'll check them out, though. Thanks.

Again, the smokes seem to be doing fine

Me likey the cedar. Smells SOOOOoooo good.
