Using gun cabinet as humidor?

my grandfather has made me a gun cabinet, and the top part is a shelf that is a about 10 inches from the top and over a foot deep. I was curious if you think I'd be able to use that area as a humidor seeing as it's essentially not connected to the gun holding area and they are generally built to seal out (or in this case in) moisture. Would it work?

If it is a box with a good seal, I don't see any reason why it shouldn't. As long as it is independent from the gun storage area, I say give it a shot.

ya I was planning on lining it with something of that sort first, should be pretty simple/straightforward, however I don't know the best way to get ahold of some Spanish cedar planks...

You can find Spanish cedar trays pretty readily online. Or, if you have enough smokes in it then you really don't need the cedar.

Anything can be made to work, but it wouldn't be my first choice. Given your grandfather made it, he probably used real wood, and real wood expands with moisture (which is why cheap humidors are made of MDF made to look like wood). Moisture and guns don't really mix well AFAIK.

well right, clearly metal + moisture is a bad thing, but I don't really wanna buy a humi right now, plus when the doors are closed (two glass doors that I may end up putting foam lining on to make sure they seal correctly), the shelf area and the gun storage are totally seperate, so I guess I could get two Hygrometers one for each area to test it out and make sure it's all cool.

It's a good thought but the idea of mixing firearm storage and cigars doesn't hit on all cylinders for me. I go to great lengths to make sure moisture is eliminated in my safe, and that humidity is high in my humidor. Best bet if you really want to do that might be to get an inexpensive humi and keep in the cabinet if you wanted.

One other consideration to keep in mind is that most gun cabinets are more decorative items and designed more to display the guns rather than preserve them through hunidity control.

No, No, No, No, No, No... Unless you want your cigars to smell/taste like Hoppes #9. Do your guns and cigars a favor, don't try it. The guns should be kept at an RH of 50% or less. Gun oils and cleaner vapors would find there way into the sealed area and I don't think you could separate them well enough.

I'd buy a box. Hoppes always makes me feel great after using it on my guns... maybe I should open a window

I have thought of that it just seems so...cheap. I dunno, it's definitely worth a try, I hear it works great - I just think it would look strange in the corner of the room whereas a small humi would look nice on the shelf (I agree this seems like a better idea).

Go to Cheap Humidors (www.cheaphumidors.com) and get yourself a decent humi. They even have a "make an offer" button so you don't have to pay what they have listed as the price.

I've found that they will take an offer that's 10% to 15% off what they have listed, just FYI.

well I broke down and bought a humi, says it holds about 50, apparently we have this nifty little place called the tinder box about 10 mins from my house, had some good stuff, seemed like a nice guy too (even if I felt extremely out of place in a store full of people who are more than likely 30 years older than me), picked up a few Montecristo Whites too, I heard they were a good mild/medium bodied cigar - and they are, me and a buddy chilled for awhile and smoked one each.
