Special occasion cigars

Hi all,

I'm not a cigar smoker at all. The last time I smoked one was about 10 years ago and I enjoyed it, but not enough to take it up.

Sorry for the sacrilidge!!! haha.

Anyway, my wife and I are going to have a baby next year and I kinda like the idea of buying some cigars the day the baby is born (or close to it) and keeping them until their 18th birthday and celebrating with a decent cigar and a good single malt.

So...
1) What kind of cigar would you recommend?

2) Is this a feasible idea?

3) Do cigars even last that long?

4) Do they need to be contained anywhere special?

5) How much is this going to cost me?

Oh, and if this makes any difference, I live in Sydney, Australia.

Anyway, thanks for any input- look forward to reading your replies.

What specific brand? I have no idea. What do you like? WHY are you doing this again?

Not really. You can do it, but I don't think you realize what's involved.

3) Do cigars even last that long?

Depends on what kind of cigar you choose.

4) Do they need to be contained anywhere special?

Yes. You'll need a humidor. And it's not going to be something that you set up now and forget about. You'll need to upkeep it (or at least recognize it's existence) once a month. Is this project worth that cost and effort worth 216 trips?

5) How much is this going to cost me?

Again, impossible question to answer - way too many variables.

Well! Why didn't you say so in the first place!

I am a firm believer in that cigars should be enjoyed. Sure, there are definitely cigars in my humidor that I am holding on to for a special occasion in the future, but those distances are, comparably, rather soon in coming.

Supposing you wish to continue on with your project, you'll need:
Cigars - you might want to smoke a few to see what you like first. No sense in coddling something for so long if you don't like it to begin with. Then again, cigars change with age. So, you're screwed.
Storage - you'll at least need a humidor to take care of these. Let's say you only buy 5 cigars for this monumental achievement. Then you'll need to make sure the humidification device works properly. I would say that you'd need to just check on it at least once a month to make sure everything is kosher. You may have to replace some things over time. I don't know.

But honestly, I can think of other ways to celebrate the very special occasion of getting to be 18 years old. Why the fascination with an aged cigar? Take him/her to a cigar bar then and treat them. You'll/they'll never know the difference, and you won't have to deal with this all this time. I can just see your child peeing on the rug/getting suspended from school/crashing your car and you going back to that humidor thinking, "He'll enjoy this!"

It would really suck if you spent all that time/money/energy and then you get out the cigars after 18 years, smoke one and puke (either because you don't normally smoke cigars and aren't used to them, or because the cigar got 18 years of worserness).

I would do the cigar bar as Mark suggested - much safer.

Interesting idea though - congrats on the addition to your family!

I think an Acid cigar would be a fine choice. I know many of this forum have spoken fondly of them. I think you could place them in your freezer and it won't alter their taste at all.
