I have one in my garage and use it when it's not convenient to fire up the wood stove. It works fine, and the only smell is when I shut it off, but that quickly goes away. Ventilation is the key though as Shelby07 mentioned, so if you've got airflow, you should be good. Is it a passive heater, or does it have a blower?

ETA: Welcome back to the board.

I have one as well, we use it at the hunting club house all winter. The only time it smells is when it's running low on fuel and when you shut it down.

Damn thing HAS set three dogs on fire this season, though... so be careful!

Yep, 35x26 3 car garage with windows and vent fans on either side. It's a forced air heater; it's pretty small so it can't be more than 70,000 BTU. I just set up my lounge so I may just keep this as my smoke spot in the summer. Then I might have to worry about a/c.
