Thread: Installing fans

  1. Default Installing fans

I have a 12 bottle wine cooler I am converting to a wineador. My beads are on the way. However do you have any suggestions on how to install a small fan in the wineador? I am thinking about using a computer box fan but I need advice on how to wire it up. Also this small fan moves 35 CFM. I’m only dealing with about 1.2 cubic feet so I don't think it needs to move 35 CFM. The fan specifications are 12 volt DC and 0.3 amps. I have a AC to DC cigarette lighter type power source that is 12 volt and 6 amps. I was thinking about wiring the computer fan to a cigarette lighter style plug and just plugging it in. However, I am concerned that the fan blowing at 35 CFM could somehow be harmful as I do not need to move that much air. Is there a way to install some type of regulator to safely slow down the speed of the fan I do not want to damage my cigars?

    Thanks.

Beads. Who cares about the CFM.

They're not as delicate as some think.

Use a lower voltage converter.....say like 6 volt. The fan will turn slower.

I might just do that insted of trying to wire up some complex thing. I also am I over thinking this? For some reason I think I am starting to.

For only 1.2 cubic feet you really don't need a fan - if you want you can rotate your cigars every couple months or so from top shelf to bottom shelf, but you likely won't notice any difference. You could put two hygros in there to see what the difference is, but I have found that hygros are built to provide you with incorrect readings anyway - it's all part of the government trying to screw with us.

Beads + throw hygro away =

I'd not worry about pissing with a converter. If you want to slow the fan down, mod it to 5v. Should be some guides on the net on how to 5v mod a PC fan.

Go out and find an "Oust Fan". I picked a couple up at my local grocery store. (here's an example) ---> http://www.amazon.com/Oust-Portable-.../dp/B000XR4F24

I replace the D battery in it every 3-6 months, and it works great circulating the air. No muss - no fuss. And you can put it anywhere you want within the cooler. .

..just don't install the oust "scent" package, or you'll end up with Acid cigars.

I have hurd of people using these oust fans I have read that they are discontinued. I hope not. I may look for some seams easier. O I second the on the acid cigars

I wired up the fan, I wired it to the 12 volt power source I have and placed a $2 rheostat in the circuit on the + wire. I completely forgot about potentiometers (variable resisters). Only problem is the drain hole in the back is small and it makes a sharp curve which I was not able to feed the wires through. I do not want to do any permanent changes to this cooler as I am going to convert it back for wine once I break the bank and get a big one. So I fed the wires right through the door. They are real small so they should not the effect the seal. My beads should be here in a few days I can't wait to get them so I can make a big cigar order, and expand out of this 30 count desk top.

Got the beads in a few days ago, have not run the fan. Fan was pointless in the wineador with beads. Could have spent the money on a few extra cigars.
