I personally use smoked paprika and some minced garlic. Depending on the age, a little Worcestershire as well.

Buy some beads, and forget about the hygrometer. Not 100% about the tap water in there - I'd make sure that was quite dry before applying the distilled water, but I don't know. I wouldn't imagine your humidor has suffered any permanent damage.

Finally, search & read. Then read some more.
