Thread: Aging an Opus X

    Default Aging an Opus X

I just bought a Fuente Fuente Opus X. After reading some reviews on this cigar, I have noticed a phrase coming up again and again. "Great on its own, but it could use some aging." How long should I age this fine cigar?

Default Aging a cigar seems to be a subjective thing.....

Fuentes are already aged (or so the industry says) and should be great right out of the box and they usually are.

In my opinion, and please understand I am a big fan of Fuente, any Fuente could stand for a couple of months resting in the humidor before smoking.

Also, do yourself a favor and leave the cello wrapper on.

Oops! I forgot! I have honestly only had maybe two Opus X in my life so far. I have a problem spending such amounts of money on a single cigar. Possibly Opus X's need more time. Hopefully someone else here can help.

Somebody gave me an Opus X and it has been sitting in my humidor. I am afraid to smoke it cause they are not cheap and not easy to come by

Its like I am waiting for a special event to celebrate by smoking it, cause to just light it up on any random day seems like a waste

    Hey;

I have had Opus X cigars right from the Cigar Shop and a few with 8-14 months aging. The aged ones were definitly more mellow and smooth. Personally I would skip the Opus X's altogether. They are good, but there is a lot better out there. Most Punch cigars are good and I like a lot of the Romeo Y Julieta's. (And they are both a hell of a lot cheeper!)

Everyone's tastes are different though, Enjoy.

Opus X are fantastic cigars and I disagree with Island Epicurean, there are not many cigars out there that are "better" certainlly not domestic RyJ's or domectic Punch.

Every Fuente product I've ever had is fine right out of the box. Most shops IMO store their cigars too wet and just about every Opus X I smoke right out of the shop burns crooked because it's too wet

So, I keep them in my humi for a couple of weeks to "dry out." My humis usually run about 60% RH which I find works the best for all cigars including Opus X.

I've got some aged Opus (three years +) and I honestly don't notice THAT much difference.

Again, I'd just make sure they sit in your humi fo a couple of weeks.

The local shop here keeps their stuff very humid also, I asked them about it and they said its because the average customer does not have a humidor so they keep them wetter so they take longer to dry out, witch is better for the average customer.

great cigars.. but as CC already said. They come too wet from most shops.. let them rest at a decent rh 63-65% is my preference for a cple months and bam.....they will smoke wonderfully.. I am partial to ANejo's more so than the opus.. Well with the excpetion of the xXx...

Just for clarification, this is a domestic Opus X, not a Cuban one... Do they make Cuban ones?... I wonder what a Cuban tastes like? ... ... Never had a non-domestic before. mmmmmm. ... ...

    Sorry CC, I couldn't resist.

Anyway I have a question, I noticed the anejo's were on your list of favs. I have never tried one. I did some searching and people have called them the Maduro Opus. It seemed to be the opinion of some retailers that the anejo's have the same filler and binder.

    Is this correct?

A new 2 guys smoke shop opened about 10 mins. from the office and I was going to see what they stocked at lunch. I am hoping to pick up a couple.

    thanks

If you are really worried about it I'd be happy to store it in my humidor for you. You can just tell me when to smoke it I mean send it back.

I'd like to chime in on this.

I love opus x. I've heard of people not touching them for 4 or 5 years! I personally won't smoke the sungrown fuentes until they sit for atleast 6 months!

Aging opus is difficult for some, including me, because they are great cigars, although strong. If you age in the cello, I think it tends to keep the flavor more robust, and if you remove the cello, it tends to wear off after the months roll by, IMHO.

Opus isn't "hard to get" it's just people get to stingy with it, and then shops either limit it, and sell more to the usual customers OR gougers take nice people to the cleaners.

I recommend smoking one fresh, and then storing one for 6 months to a year. You'll see a difference.

Plus some burning issues have been due, in large part, to the extra oily wrappers these cigars have fresh out of the box. The longer it sits, the oils go into the cigar, and thus, making it tasty!

i have way more than 5000 cigars....so a lot of my cigars are aging.....i agree with letting some cigars sit for a while....

i've heard guys say "the cigar i'll smoke today is one i bought 6 months ago...the cigars i buy today,i'll enjoy in 6 months"...

.....just don't get too anal about it....if you feel like smoking a particular cigar in your stash...do it...

    btw,i don't like opus x ...AT ALL........
