Two things I'd figure out:
1) Figure out what size cigar you're most comfortable with smoking and the ring size.
2) Once you figure that out, buy some cigars from your local shop across the spectrum (mild->full bodied).
After that, you should start figuring out what you like and go from there. The biggest mistake I made was that I didn't take the time to figure out what size cigar and ring size I liked the best.
