Canada: Not Just America's Hat

Hey All;

After the Canadian Federal election, we have a starkly different governing power. The Conservative government, under Stephen Harper, is very pro american and reflects many of the more conservative US values.

I was wondering what my fellow Canadian's think of this new minority government. (To the American posters, they are a minority because they do not have the majority of our parlementary seats as compared to the other Federal parties combined.) What about our American or international posters..... What do you think? Is a more conservative, pro-american government a good thing?

I like it just the same as anyone else out west does. There is a reason that the Conservative party swept alberta. Stephen Harper is from Calgary. Finally, the East (Ontario) smartened up and got the Liberals out. During the elections they were talking about banning handguns. WTF would that accomplish? Do they think that all the gang bangers are going to turn in their handguns? I'm sure that they all have legally acquired guns in the first place . I personally am excited to see what Harper does. Now that Harper is in power, we will have a lot more pull with the States. I agree with his pro-american views and would like to see Canada turn into a similar country.

Canadians have the right to vote as they wish, but I am glad they now have a government that may see more eye to eye with our government so we can cooperate on issues. Was it Canada that refused to partner with the US on our missile defense shield a while back? I can't remember.

Canadians have the right to vote as they wish, but I am glad they now have a government that may see more eye to eye with our government so we can cooperate on issues. Was it Canada that refused to partner with the US on our missile defense shield a while back? I can't remember.

I don't necessarily agree with everything the US government does, but I don't agree with a lot of the shite that the Canadian government has done either. The United States is our neighbour and we need to try to get along with them better, hopefully this will help.

Except for a couple of years in my early 20's I have lived four maybe five hours tops from Canada, still never been there.

I've been to London probably a dozen times, Amsterdam, Paris, and Hong Kong. And until this winter, had NEVER been to Canada.

Really? I actually know a few people who have had similar travelling experiences...... It is amazing how many people have travelled all over the world, yet never crossed the Canada/America border.

It is funny you should mention missle defence. During the election that was a major issue.

There seems to be a sharp polarity among Canadians when it comes to missle defence. Some strongly support it, some are starkly against it. Personally I support working with our American neighbors to tighten North American security. There is very strong opposition to this plan however. Given the fragile nature of Stephen Harper's government, I doubt we will be agreeing to any missle defence systems in the near future.

What's really amazing is how few from outside of North America have been to the United States.

When I was working in London, I learned how small the world is outside NA. I worked with Kiwis, Aussies, North Africans, Chinese, and remarkably few actual English. No one thought anything of popping off to Europe or Oz or South Africa. Oddly enough, none of them had ever been to the United States, but most of them had been to Canada at least a half-dozen times.

The obvious exception is the Irish, most of whom talk about Boston as if it were a short train ride from Dublin.
