New to Cigars, inexpensive asst.?

Hello- I am not new to smoking cigars but never learned anything about them. Friends have always picked them out. I have been researching around the net but you guys have all the knowledge I am looking for. I am looking to buy an assortment (half dozen) of inexpensive (up to $10) cigars to try out to readily available at the local store. I want to smoke in the morning on my long commute and dont remember the ones that I preffered. I bet this is a repost but was having a difficult time searching for this exact situation so if anyone wants to point me in the right direction...Thank you for any advice. Dave

There's tons of stuff you can get for under $10. Here's a short list - there'll be others adding on.

Really, any of the Padron 1000 series. The 2000 is probably small for a long commute, but the 3000 and 5000 are both good. Or a 6K if you like a torpedo. I forgot what a 4K is. They all come in natural or maduro.

The Carlos Torano 1959 (gold) series are great smokes - the toro and torps are nice-sized cigars. The signature line is excellent - a bit stronger.

Oliva classic, bold, and if you want a strong cigar, the maduros, are all outstanding smokes - their robustos are a little small.

You might want to start a cigar journal to help you remember what you like. There's an online journal here that looks cool - I haven't tried it yet.

I read where some old head of a cigar company said that the only good $10 cigar came with a five and 2 ones wrapped around it. At any rate, you've got lots of room with a ten.

Thanks guys- for the welcome and the suggestions. I want to pick up a bunch next week, try em out, try a few more out the week after then pick up a box of my favorite online. I will look into that journal to help make my decisions.

I am from CT by the way and commute to college. I am also an active member of licolnsonline.com so if anyone needs any information on ther Lincoln....

I would like to recommend any of the Indian Tabac line. I have yet to be disappointed with them. The Classic Corojo Cheifs are nice big cigars that go great with coffee. I think they're on sale right now at CI. To get good prices on cigars, you will have to buy a box or bundle. Fivers can be priced OK, but singles are almost always priced full retail.

Well, I was able to score a unopened 5 pack of cohiba panetelas for $15 at a tag sale, it looks legit. So I guess I am starting with Cubans?! I will try one then some of the others mentioned like fonseca and padron.

My question is once the box is opened, how should I store them? I dont have a humi so would a ziplock bag with a damp cottonball in it work OK or should I do nothing?

A cheapie humidor...

I purchased the Rubbermaid "Takealongs" Rectangles 32 Oz (4 cups). They come 3 to a pack, and were $2,99 for the whole shooting match at my local grocery store. They're not real heavy and seem to have a nice enough seal to hold in the moisture. This is a pefect temporary humidor. I was able to fit about 12 sticks or so, with a little humidificiation device (I'd suggest you check with your local shop, they usually have left over humidi-packs from Fuente stuff - if not, they usually have the <$1.00 water pillows).

Have you been paying attention to which smokes you liked?

If so, find yourself a good smoke shop and ask for some suggestions... CoventryCat can help you find one (unless your commute takes you East, that's my territory).

I did the newbie sampler on another site, and it was a great way to get a nicotene starter kit!!!

The FOGs have a good selection, tried and tested. They are very fair, and a great deal for us to get our hands on a variety!!

The guy didnt know anything about cigars so I guess I got lucky. I will take a pic of the box tommorow.

I will ask my smoke shop about the water pillows and I do have a bunch of those ziplock storage bowls I can use. I will deffinitly look into a real humi after I get a box of my favorites. The cubans will be rationed I will try that smokers journal once I get some cigars from my smoke shop. I will also see what Paul suggests for me as well.

I live outside of New haven and dont know about the guy who restores the lincolns but I'll ask around for ya. I own a 93 TC but would not mind buying a classic Lincoln.
