What a day. I get to the store at around 2:00. I see the same guy that I bought them from yesterday. I walk to the box of Opus's and no price is listed. So I tell the guy, "hey, I think you undercharged me yesterday. I only paid $30 for all 4." The clerk is whispering, "no, no...i charged you the right amount." Low and behold, one of the guys sitting on the couch turns up to be his boss and hears the conversation. He asks for the last 4 digits of my credit card to pull up the previous day's transaction. Turns out the clerk had given me his employee discount...which he really wasn't supposed to do by the look on the boss's face. I paid the difference to try to keep the guy out of trouble, but I don't know. He may be in some trouble.

Awwww, shoot! That's not cool. I hope this doesn't turn you off to doing the right thing. I know you probably feel guilty about causing this guy trouble for a percieved favor, but the employee kind of got himself into that mess. Good intentions, Robin Hood syndrome, or whatever you call it. You CAN'T be considered generous with someone else's stuff, only your own. A thief is a thief, even Robin Hood. It makes a good fictional story, but a poor lifestyle choice. He stole a profit from his boss and gave it to you as a gift. He has to be held accountable for that. It's his responsibility. He didn't ask you if you wanted the "special" price, did he? Were he giving food to starving children, his circumstances might be more mitigating.

Excellent analysis. However, toasty, I sincerly hope you sit yourself down and enjoy one of those smokes, and soon. You have done the right thing and deserve a break.

Very honorable of the employee, but I think the employee should have told you he was going to give you the cigars at his "employee discount". Sure would have saved him some trouble, don't you think?

Been sitting back and watching this thread progress. Toasty; For a while there, I thought you were going to be "toast". Just another asshat chased out. Good work in recognizing a mistake. Fantastic apology. Excellent form, Toasty!
